Cranky bartender is not a good 1st impression

We went on a Saturday night for dinner for a good friend's bachelor party. The moment we arrive for our reservation we were met by possible the most obnixious bartender I have ever experieced. One of the group bellied up to the bar whlile we aere waiting and asked is the bartender could make a rec. for a wiskey. The response was curt with annoyance, stating there were to many types of wiskeys that my firend should be more specific. When my firend responded "so I guess you have no reccomandations the bartender did not respond. Whe we were sat down the serivce was ok if not a bit too swift (were they desparate to get us out of there?) The bacon slice app. was burnt. The potato was nearly thrown at me and the steak didn't even have a mild dash of salt and pepper. Kinda lack luster for a bill that came to over $500 not includ. tip. the experience did not live up to what was supposed to be a special night with friends.

    Meat me at Lugers

Well fellow beefites, if there is one thing for certain it's that PL is THE BEST TASTING piece of meat this side of Texas. It had all the components of carefully dry aged beef- concentrated flavor, nicely marbled but not overly fatty and a simple seasoned flavor that made your bread basket come alive with sopping the wonderful juices. Now remember THIS is why you came. Not for the poorly stocked bar and by that I mean basic spirits going on with a few well known high end for imbibment - hey, wheres the "Pappy Van Winkle" for the bourbon lovers - you are PL afterall with guests paying without flinching from ALL OVER the world !! No Ciroc ?? NO Tanq 10 ?? Not what I call fancy but just what a world class steak house should have in bar that was hopping with patrons willing to splurge. The shrimp was tough and had been in the water at Lugers longer than where it came from soooo Hail the mighty bacon slices and enjoy the succulent flavor along with sweet onion and red ripe tomato dolloped with Luger sauce - you won't be disappointed ! By far one of the tastiest pieces of bacon we've ever eaten. Now the only thing a steak as good as that can have at it's side is some form of spud - the ultimate food marriage. Well if the "German potatoes" we ordered was to be that marriage - I want a divorce !! No flavor of onion or otherwise and simply not the better choice - next time better to go baked and loaded with all the usuals. The creamed spinach was simply delicious- not gloppy with lots of cream but nicely seasoned and a lucious velvety texture well prepared. Uh BTW, is there a mushroom shortage in Bklyn ? or is this the mistress to the steak and potato marriage that was kicked out of town!! at least offer buttons sauteed in butter as a side. We ended our meal with a traditional strudel that was just what a good apple strudel should be - warm inside, crispy outside brimming with cinnamony apples with a delicious schlag of fresh whipped cream . Following our hot piping cup of freshly brewed coffee ( what, no espresso ? - mamma mia ! ) we thanked our waiter for his excellent service ( despite forgetting our order of onions which ended up we didn't miss ) and 3 well fed men returned back to Ct. talking about when we'll MEAT at Lugers again !

    Best Steaks and Best Burgers

The best steak and best burger I've ever had in my life have been at Peter Luger. There's not much to say about the steak that hasn't already been said, so I'll get to the burger. I love burgers, and the Luger burger puts any other burger I've ever eaten to shame, and that includes Corner Bistro, Burger Joint, Shake Shack, and JG Melon among others. I've heard other people complain that their burgers have been over or under-cooked, but that wasn't the case when I had my first Luger burger a couple of weeks ago. Maybe I went on a good day because my two friends and I all ordered burgers, and all of our burgers were cooked to the requested level of doneness. They also thought that the Luger burger was the best burger they had ever eaten.

    Best Steak. No Frills.

I have three statements about the negative comments. You are not a born bred new yorker. You don't know a thing about good steak. Please keep yourself within the confines of the meatpacking district and other poser neighborhoods.

Not worth the trip or the price

Have been to Peter Luger a few times and it's gotten worse and worse. The porterhouse is fatty and greasy and pretty tough, even medium rare. It's just not worth it anymore...the service is poor and the atmosphere is pathetic - filled with clueless tourists in tshirts, shorts and fanny packs asking about the menu and getting shocked at the prices and the cash only policy. Won't be back...ever again.

Historic but the staff is not good and steak has gone downhill

Say whatever you want, yes its horstoic and a tourist must-go, but if you're a resident of NYC and not going out to dinner with your 60yo uncle who actually remembers when this place was amazing, its a waste of time. So many places (del friscos, aj maxwell, wolfgangs) have considerably better (at a minimum equal) steak and uncomparable service. peter luger's should spend some money on english classes and perhaps teach service with a smile, but they apparently dont care. the only reason i go is due to the corporate card and if it wasnt the case, i would never return.. unless i didnt have to talk to any workers and my meal would magically appear. thanks, sorry for the rant but the last 3 times have gotten worse each time

Their steaks are just okay, nothing to write home about.
