Expected Better for first timers
The potatoes, steaks, drinks, and sundaes were ok. I had the steak well done so I lost a lot of tenderness of it. The German Potatoes are very salty. The steaks looks overburnt but it doesn't really bother me. My mistake to order a hot fudge sundae since it melted in a minute and the whip cream was damp warm.

Service is much better than given credit for
We went there for Mother's Day. The steaks were excellent! The price was good. They get a bad rap for having rude waiters. On the contrary or waiter was friendly, informative and shook our hands we we left. A truly class restaurant.

Completely overrated!
My wife is a Foodie and I like good food as well, at the same time, as owner of a cattle ranch, I also enjoy a good size steak. Therefore, we travel just for food! This time we came to NYC with my dad and friend, so we've spent three days eating out and trying restaurants. We've heard so much about this place for so long that finally we decided to go. It's totally overrated! The steak isn't that great! Could be any college fraternity BBQ! My wife's fish didn't have taste. The side potatos looked recicled and were burned. The service is like if they were doing us a favor! Sincerely, my advice to all is don't fall on this trap. Regards

Still the best!
Peter Luger is a family tradition. We've been going there for years, and they still serve steak so delicious you could cry. When you go, don't expect fawning service. That's not what a steak house is about. But, that said, we've never had anything but excellent service. And we keep things simple -- Porterhouse, of course. We always order one size less than the menu recommends. Porterhouse for 3 easily serves 2. Always creamed spinach. Always German potatoes. Always a slice or two of bacon to share. Maybe tomatoes. And a sundae. That's it. No menu necessary. No sauce either. Nothing needs it. We are lucky to have Peter Luger! More than 100 years of Brooklyn tradition! The steak is truly butter smooth, peak flavor, and an anti-depressant. Yes, there are other delicious steak places, but there is room in our hearts and stomachs for all of the greats! Plus, you get chocolate gelt at the end. Splurge and take your dad.

If you want to be told what to eat and be insulted......
Went here with my family because of reputation. "No, you cannot have fillet mignon!" "I will tell you what you can have!" "You don't like a burnt crust? Go somewhere else!" " We don't need your business! We have enough lemmings willing to be insulted and give us their money!" Really, I have never been to such a pretentious place with such bad food.

Best steak period
Was afraid it was going to be a disappointment after all the "best steak in the United States" accolades, but it was above and beyond all expectations! The steak was butter tender and flavorful, the Peter Luger sauce was fitting for EVERYthing on the menu except for the desserts (as told to us by our waiter), German fried potatoes, creamed spinach - all amazing!

Great New York Steak & History
Old School New York City institution. Like being in a time capsule. Real taste of old New York.
