Peter Luger Steak House

I've been to most great steak houses in NYC and Long Island and I can honestly say this is the worst steak I've had at a place with a good reputation. It just seems like it wasn't aged at all, was quite tasteless. Also be aware (and that part I am fine with) is that there is essentially nothing else on the menu other than the one kind of steak that they serve, and some side-dishes. The atmosphere is quite original, but certainly not cozy or upscale. Service is VERY rushed; the waiter came up to us several times to ask if we were done. Wine list is very limited, drinks are bad. The verdict: maybe go once to say that you've been to Peter Luger and perhaps you will like it better than I did! My recommendation for the best steak: Rothman's on Long Island.

But everything else kind of stinks. This is a very New York establishment - they've built their reputation on one singluar, specific thing: steak. And it is delicious, and cooked perfectly! However, the service is really not good - they rush you through your meal, and our waiter insisted on telling us what to order (not that there are many choices) rather than asking us. The wine list is crap, and the bottles are horribly overpriced. The veggies that we ordered with the food were good. Not great, but good. The desserts were just bad. In a way, I love that places like this exist. They are what make New York... New York. Go for the experience and the chance to say, "I ate at Peter Luger's!" But don't go hoping to spend the best $100 of your life.

First of all...not only is this the best steak you will ever eat, THIS IS THE BEST FOOD YOU WILL EVER EAT. The bacon is taking a bite of god's butt. The tomato and onion with lugers sauce will satisfy your wife. And the steak (get it cooked rare as it will cook on the plate) Is absolutely unreal. As for people complaining about the waiters being "indifferent" and "not caring about you" this is modeled after a german beer hall and that is the whole idea. All in all, if you are looking for a great atmosphere and have a big appetite for the best meal of your life GO HERE!!

Just simply the best.

The historic Peter Luger's that any New Yorker with an interest in restaurants has heard of is like any self-important place that believes they are doing you a favor allowing you to eat there. The ledger is packed with clients coming in the evening. But it's a loud, raucous place where waiters treat you with indifference. The bread is cold, the sides are fair, the steak is good, but not the best I've had especially for the price. A much better experience can be had at Knickerbockers, or Old Homestead, or even chains like Mortons or Smith and Wollensky where the food selection is broader with higher quality from salad to sides. The service was abysmal. Unless you are loud, drunk, and oblivious to arrogance, it's better to go elsewhere for your steak.

I've been traveling a lot lately and eating at some rather top rated steak houses across the USA. Through out my career I've wanted to try Peter Luger but never had the business reason to spend the cash....Well an old client and friend of mine gave me and my boss the reason to try the Great Neck venue. All I can say is WOW! Great value when compared to the other high end steak houses, service and the food was to die for PERIOD. Think I'm going back soon with the same friend sans the boss this time.

I'm going to make this quick, and I'm going to make this easy. This is the best steak you've ever had. They haven't changed a thing over the years and it is serious old school meat lovers dream. No, the staff isn't "cute" nor "cuddly" but your not there to get warm and fuzzy. You are there to have the best steak you've ever had.
