It has been voted best steak house in NYC for 28 straight years...and it is. If you want a great steak without a lot of "fancy"...this is it. Yes, there are other great steak houses in NYC, although the person who said the Strip House is better than this steak, I think, doesn't know what good steak is. But, its all subjective...personally, its the best steak I have ever had, been three times and will continue to go back. Its not fancy, the servers don't babysit you and fold your napkin when you get up...its just damn good steak.

To answer all the people who want to know why the negative reviews, have any of you been to any of the other steak houses in NYC? I can name at least five other places that will give you the "carnage" you are looking for with tastier sides, better ambiance and the same or better service. The steak here is not better than the Strip House or Del Frisco's. I had the steak for 3 at Lugers. It was good. It was not "mind blowing." Nothing here is "mind blowing." It was good. Only good. Would not return unless someone else was paying for the meal. The sides, to me, were on the pathetic side for an upscale steakhouse. Mind blowing if you're at a diner, but not for a steakhouse. When I pay that kind of money, I want to get a little more because I'm paying a lot more. It was good. Only good.

Party of 4. Bacon app tasted good but had a chewy consistency. Got the steak for 3. Large portions but there is only ONE kind of steak. Price was $143 for the steak for 3. Sides were mediocre. Creamed spinach was a little bland. Fries were good and the baked potatoe was enormous! 2 hot fudge sundaes to top it off. Total bill, WITHOUT drinks was $227. Note: one of the four people was a small child. I have had better meals for less money. If you want to spend a tad bit less for better food, try Del Friscos.

To be honest, they sure sell the sizzle not the steak. It was ok and I mean ok, definitely nothing special. Nice ambience great service; very disappointing.

So after all these yrs my GF and I decided to try Luger's, given what we've heard about it. The good - the bacon was unlike anything I've ever eaten, the creamed spinach was perfect, the German-potatoes were outstanding. Our cocktails were excellent, as was the warm pecan pie w/schlag (never had it warm like that before). However, given how their porterhouse is the centerpiece of all things Luger, I have to say it wasn't the best steak. It was good, but I've had better steaks at Capital Grille and Maloney/Porcelli (I'm just saying). Although the butter-based broth was unique and tasty, the steak itself wasn't what everyone hyped it up to be. Perhaps this place gets too hyped up? I'm not sure. I do hope some day I have the chance to go back again, b/c I'd like to give it another shot. Regardless, overall it was a nice checkmark off the NYC culinary bucket list.

We went last night, and we're still drooling over the experience. I don't understand all of the negative reviews about the place. The steak was a mind blowing experience, pure gold! The breads, french fries, spinach, sauce, etc were delicious. The waiters were friendly but not sycophantic, which is the way it should be at a steakhouse! This is not the kind of place to sip wine and look longingly into the eyes of your companion over soft candlelight We are there for serious carnage, not for empty niceties. We go there for the kill! No place like it!
