Pepe Rosso To Go
Posted by American Italian on 04/06/2008
Had heard great things about this place and was looking forward to the meal only to be very disappointed. I ordered the eggplant parm and penne vodka. The eggplant was somewhat chewy, lacking for cheese, and in a sauce that was too bland for my taste. The penne vodka was all together lackluster as well. Although the pasta was cooked to my liking, the sauce was watery and flavorless. Will not likely order from here again.

for some reason, this tiny little place has managed to do what the large fancy restaurants have, for the majority, failed at. Straight-forward, simple, delicious Italian food, and since Italian cooking is all about fresh simple ingredients the dishes' prices for once actually reflect this as well. As an Italian 1st generation American, I visit my family in Italy as often as I can and only at peppe rosso have I found the same living breathing soul that is only and without a doubt simply Italian. My only regret is that I don't live closer.

Tucked between a church and an old italian butcher you will find Pepe Rosso. Relatively non-descript from the outside, the inside is cramped but welcoming. The menu is handwritten and offers a wide variety of italian classics, done simply but most importantly done well. There's a range of different pastas to choose from and I'd highly recommend their sandwiches on freshly baked focaccia. The best part about the place is that nearly all of the dishes are under $10 making it one of the best deals I've found in all of New York City. It's also a great place to take a date (mainly in the summer time when they have additional tables outdoors or order your food to go and take it to washington square park only a few blocks north.) If you're looking a good cheap simple meal at a place that still hasn't quite been completely overrun by the commercialization that has taken the rest of the neighborhood, try Pepe Rosso. Or keep them on speed dial and order out/for pickup. Just don't expect a smile when you order your food.

I live on the same street as this place and get pickup all the time. It's cheap and always made fresh. The poster who complained about the freshness should have called them back. The owner is very nice and certainly would have sent over another dish.

Just a hole in the wall, but #@!%! the food is good.

I ordered pasta for lunch from this place and it was poor. The pasta tasted like it had been sitting out all day, it was rubbery and bad. Did not like. How hard is it to make penne w/ tomato & basil?

I visited the Sullivan location with a friend from out of town, we both enjoyed our food immensely. Of course the food is exceptional, but the space is cramped, but before you know it you are up and out anyway. The bread was oh so good! It's a must try The spinach and REAL Ricotta was GREAT!
