    best Wonton Soup in NYC

I have been to Penang twice with friends and enjoyed both trips. Our meals (Chicken Lamak, Green Curry, Wok Salmon) were good, nothing to rave about, but very still tasty. You MUST try the wonton soup there. It is the best I have had. Not oily at all and delicious.

    Great Local Restaurant

I live right around the block and had always wanted to try this restaurant. Now I'm very glad I did! I went for the lunch special based on what other reviewers had said. The lunch special is lower-priced than the regular menu but once my meal came out, I could see why they charge the prices that they do. The portions are huge! I saw someone who had ordered the lunch special for $10 and I was wondering how he was supposed to eat it all. I ordered a curry noodle soup, which was amazing. My boyfriend wasn't as pleased with his egg noodle soup, which was slightly bland. We wound up both eating my soup, which was enough for 2. The service was very attentive as well. All in all, a very pleasant experience. I will definitely be back.

    Best calamari ever

This is my favorite restaurant in the city. They have the best fried calamari (Sotong Goreng) I have ever tasted. There is so much flavor that dipping sauce is unnecessary. Some are grossed out by the tentacles, however those are the best pieces. I took my sister here who finally tasted it after much begging and she loved it. I miss the old location that had the lounge downstairs with great r&b music. But as long as the food is the same. Staff is very friendly and the food comes quick. Favorite dishes are the Kari Ayam, buah mango with shrimp, malaysian rice, and the fried ice cream. I highly recommend this place.

    Nice Food

I am from Singapore and I find the beef rendang very nice. It is the best I had in NY so far.

It pains me to say this.

I loved Penang. I really did. It was a great spot on the UWS. Since they have moved, the quality of the food has been dropping. Today, I ordered the Curry Beef lunch special, and they still give a lot of food, but instead of the chunks of beef I was used to - I got three leathery strips of beef. It was the type of beef you would expect to find at Taco Grill or one of the hole in the wall Chinese places that dot the landscape where you can get a plate of food for 2 bucks. But not 10. Never again. Goodbye Penang.

    Amazing Malay Food

I lived in Malaysia as a kid, and this is the best Malay food I have ever found outside of the country. The fried rice is lovely and sweet, the satays have that "special" open fire flavour, the sotong goreng is heavenly. Really really outstanding and fresh. I live in Tribeca and am still gutted that the branch on Spring St closed. Thankfully for an extra charge they will deliver out of the delivery zone which is great as I often order Penang for last minute dinner parties, and it always goes down SO well with guests. The person who complained below, saying they spent $200 for 10 people must have been thinking Malay food was meant to be like cheap Chinese food. It's far from it! The prices here are great... I don't think there's even a maincourse over $20!!!!

    great food

They have great food - especially the duck and peanut pancake. As other reviewers noted, it is a bit expensive, so the lunch special may be the way to go if you are on a budget. The service at the new location (72nd street) is a lot better than the east side Penang.
