tight spaces on main floor
if youre a big person or you like to take up space for your clothing/bags, this isnt such a great place because its a bit claustrophobic feeling the way they arrange the tables/chairs. its really awkward. ive been here a few times and i always order the same stuff....roti canai(indian pancake), cantonese style hor fun, and maybe hainese chicken. i tried some other dish and a table in front of me heard me ordering it and the woman there quickly shook her head at me and i cancelled it. because they had it in front of them at their table and they were done eating all their dishes except that one....it did look like dried up ....chunks of dungunfortunately so i quickly stopped them. their food isnt so good compared to jaya. i prefer jaya anyday. their service is so-so because their waiters usually hang around in a palce where you cant easily grab their attention if you need them. however the prices are a bit cheaper than jaya. just a bit so i suggest giving both places a try. and you decide which you like better. i think their indian pancakes here are less crispy/flaky. some ppl prefer flakiness, and some prefer chewyness. this palce is more of the chewy side

Strike Two
After feeling bad about previously giving a poor review based solely on the pad thai, I decided against my better judgement to venture back to this place. As before the restaurant was fairly deserted during lunch (that is always a bad sign). I opted for the chicken rendang since it seemed like a safe bet. Rendang has bold flavors and ostensibly is hard to mess up. It was not good. The dish (whatever it was) didn't taste like anything rendang and didn't taste good. And as with the pad thai, it appeared to be missing key ingredients - like coconut milk. I'm not sure who is in the kitchen but a cookbook might prove useful. At least I can assuredly say that pad thai is not the worst tasting thing this restaurant has to offer.

Weak Pad Thai
Okay, so I realize going to a place called Penang for Pad Thai is not the smartest move ever but I just wanted to warn the next hapless eater to avoid the Pad Thai at all costs. I have tried Pad Thai from pretty much every restaurant in lower Manhattan and this is by far the least impressive I have ever eaten. It tastes nothing like Pad Thai and raises doubts that the chef has ever even had Pad Thai. It was missing key ingredients like fish sauce! And in case this helps give guidance as to other dishes - they were very skimpy with the shrimp. There were only four of the small size shrimp in the entire dish. I want my money back.

Authentic, and that's what counts
You're not going to see any fancy presentation or decor, but it tastes pretty good for the money and is *authentic, and that's what counts. This is not the fancy pan-Asian crowd, but homely and authentic and you'll get a good menu variety with all the vitals. * My experience is mainly with Malaysian and Singaporean food in Hong Kong, although I have been to Malaysia and Singaporean on occasion.

Have discovered Roti Canai!
Surprising place ... when you first walk in you are assailed by the smells of a typical noisy, busy chinese restaurant anywhere in Chinatown. But the menu boasts Malaysian cuisine, which I must admit, I was completely new to at the time. We noticed all the other tables were ordering roti canai so we decided to go for that. The thing about Malaysian cuisine is that it seems to be a very nice blend of indian, indonesian & chinese flavors .... VERY flavorful ... that roti canai MELTED in my mouth .. I didn't want it to end!!!! We ordered beef, chicken & shrimp dishes ... ALL of them were very yummy. The shrimps were perfect, and I'm very picky abt shrimp! All in all , a very pleasant surprise ... I recommend it completely & will go there again as soon as I can!

Eh
I enjoyed the ambience in the late afternoon but when I ordered the mee siam (standard noodle dish) it came out pretty bad because the shrimp didnt have that crispy fresh taste or feel to it.

Too casual dining
Little embarrassed after bringing co-workers from UK out for a night of "fine" dining. Pictures of food on menu, order by # format. A little bit run down. Only serves beer. Poor presentation of food.
