After studying the restaurants in the area near the NY Theater Workshop, I made the decision to have dinner at Peels. Their efficiency with our reservation was done very professionally making me feel that it should be a positive dining experience. The exterior of the restaurant is welcoming but once inside it lacked warmth and was ‘very noisy’; the most noise coming from the staff hanging around the reservation desk. The menu is small but covered the basics. We decided to order salad before our meal that turned out to be a minuscule amount of various greens. I requested my dressing on the side more then once, but received it in the salad. No bread, sticks or any other assortment of nibbles was brought to the table prior to dinner. We both ordered the vegetable stew that turned out to taste very good but if there was a cup of vegetables in it, I would have been shocked. The dish they served it in was 6 inches across and would probably been an appetizer in most other restaurants. They charged a whopping $18.50 for this less then reasonable amount of food for a main course. The salad greens came to $8.50 per person. My guest ordered a diet coke that came in the smallest bottle I have ever seen. The high light of our meal was the grape sorbet as it made you pucker up, but was also a small serving. There were no other selections of sorbet although the menu featured that there were and it was a Friday night. Our waiter was very pleasant and accommodating. I don’t plan to be returning especially at these prices. Peels gave new meaning to Nouvelle Cuisine! It would behoove one to bring a magnifying glass if they want to trick their stomach into thinking they are eating larger portions.

Myself and two friends just ate brunch at Peels. The food came cold and had no seasoning. The biscuit was dry and no amount of the cold butter that was served could help. We had no chance to convey these feelings since the waiter was never to be seen. We did get the chance to see the wait staff with the manager stuffing their face on the floor and also the cleaning crew sweeping around people still eating. After this experience we had forgotten our first complaint which was that they sat us on a two-top when we were a party of three.

Pleasant and relaxed atmosphere, limited menu, pricey, stick to the simple selections.

Peels has great food, a great atmosphere, great staff... but the bloody mary... how can they not have a great one? It is the quintessential staple of any good brunch venue. It was presented with no celery, no olive, no pickle.. nothing but a lemon wedge. And the flavor was bland. It just annoyed me because everything else about this place is great. (OK the biscuits don't have flavor either)...But everything else is seriously great..Will go back again. But will opt for a Mimosa instead..

You know how sometimes you wanted something badly so you went for it despite warnings and your own sneaky suspicion! Well, I did just that and deeply regret the choices I made or, simply put - this restaurant is sub par! How can you mess up "corn dogs"? This place did- they are so soggy and drenched in oil which really broke my heart because "Corn Dogs" is one of the few obsessions I have in life. The fried chicken is overrated by some food critics- it's NOT the best in NYC! The only saving grace is the farmer's breakfast- the thick cut bacon was both crispy and succulent and fried eggs tasted farm fresh! The service was average but it's definitely over priced! Save your money and go elsewhere. Its amazing how many people still go there, perhaps like us, misled by irresponsible food reviewers.

I went last night w two friends for dinner. Server was fine, upstairs the acoustic is poor...I could not hear my friends. I order the special, Smoked Brisket. The meat was very fatty and tough. What a disappointment! My friend had the fried chicken, huge piece of chicken no sides. The best part of the meal was the dessert tripple cream pie. For the amount of money spent I rather go to a different place for dinner. Not good.

I had called ahead and been told only parties of 6 could reserve. We arrived early, 7pm, and were first shown a table beside the front door. I asked about upstairs and one of the 2 hostesses said I could look, but she wouldn't come. We went, saw a table we liked, and then had to go back downstairs to tell the hostess. She then had a waitress put us at a table beside the bar even though there was an open banquette in the central dining area. We asked for that and were told it was reserved. But how could that be, I asked, when only parties of 6 could book? It took my persistence of asking 3 times to "win" us that table--that started us off on the wrong foot. Moreover, the entire time it was a waitress who had to keep going downstairs to speak with one of the hostesses. The only other annoyance was the loud decibel of the music. Peels is a place to chat and to dine, not to shout. The music was hip-hop, which seemed out of synch with the decor and friendly spirit of the food. And the A/C was on full blast, tho it was about 55 degrees outside. Saving grace: fabulous waiter [Oneal Vargas] and v good food.
