Used to be Great but now not so much!

I remember when pearls first openned they used to be great! The value is still good but the food is not. And what happenned to items like the su bing bun or the rice balls they had under the desserts. I used to order from them everyday. Especially the lunch it was a great value. But now not even the value is enough to duffer through the meal!

    Bad service

This is my first review ever. The service was bad. It felt like waitress was rushing us all the time. Never said thank you or come by to ask if we need anything else. Looking over the shoulder to see how much tip we will eave her. Food was ok.

    Quick Delivery, Good Food

Pearls atmosphere is very warm for an UPW basic Chinese restaurant. The service is ok...all the dishes arrive at once. The crispy fish is excellent there. They took away their Shanghai dishes so there isn't anything unique here, but the food is not greasy...quite fresh. The delivery is lightening fast and the food arrives hot and tasty.

    Good Value - Free Wine

We've been coming to Pearls and Broadway Cottage before that for at last 15 years. It's our "Broadway Local" restaurant. The food is usually good, but I agree with a previous reviewer that there must be one chef (at the beginning of the week?) who isn't as good. Sometimes the cold noodles are great, other times very bland. I think the staff are very friendly, especially with children. Best dishes: Szechuan Dumplings, Dry Sauteed String Beans, Chicken with 3 kinds of Nuts and Ch. w. Young Ginger, Crispy Beef, Make your own dish. I don't like the baby corn - it tastes too canned. Wine is plentiful.

Service good, food not so good.

It seemed like 2-3 short years ago I was at a geographical nexus of a dozen Chinese places with decent-to-good food for cheap, with quick delivery. Those were the days. First-time patron of Pearls today. Pluses: Staff made phone order very easy. Very quick delivery. Well-packaged, no spillage. Reusable delivery bins (if you're into that). The drawback: Food wasn't very good, below average even, and kind of small portions relative to what I've experienced with other places. General Ching's chicken was a disappointment. My understanding was that this would be essentially the same as General Tso's chicken. It's not. I like my General Tso's crispy fried in a spicy-hot sacue. Pearls Gen. Ching's Chicken was swimming in a soupy sauce, with no crispiness or spiciness involved. There seemed to be a mixture of fresh and canned vegetables too--I never need to see any of those tiny, rubbery baby ears of corn, or any of those rubber mushrooms. Also, there were only about 10-12 small chunks of chicken. I know I've had portions at least twice that size, which is nice if you're ordering for two people, or don't mind leftover the next day. Given that the prices for Pearls are at least 15% higher, this means you're paying more, getting less. I know times are tough, and that a lot of places have gone out of business, but in terms of value, this is an important thing to take into account. Also ordered fried wonton, which was a good thing since there were two of us eating. This was probably the best part of the order, except...they came on a bed of limp, iceberg lettuce, so the wonton on bottom were a little soggy. Memo to kitchen: Iceberg lettuce not necessary, desired or welcome with fried items. Finally, we had also ordered cold sesame noodles--not bad, not good, not flavorful. Just bland. In short, unless a few more places close during this economic downturn, Pearls will stay well-down in the queue. And I still haven't found what I'm lookin' for.

Usually awesome, but they do have off-days

Been ordering and dining at Pearls for 5 years. They are great, good prices, excellent handmade wontons, love the "house special bean curd". Extremely fast delivery. But...they do have their off-days.... they must have a crappy chef working 1 or 2 nights a week (I think Monday and Tuesday) because that is when you get the watery sauce - as a reviewer mentioned below. I have only had this problem for delivery, but not very often, maybe 5 times over the last 5 years. Dining in the restaurant has never disappointed me.

    Satisfied but not take out...Horrible

We ate at pearls recommended by a friend. Our food was delicious not problem. But then I ordered an extra meal to take out. Scallops with lobster sauce for my mom. It was not good. I knew something was wrong because the food came too fast. It had no taste...it taste like water. We were highly disappointed because when we dined there, the food was good.
