Ate there tonight (Valentine's Day) and ordered the raw food pizza. It was 17.95 but I imagined it would be very good at such a high price. However, it was not at all to my liking. It was a bed of buckwheat, soaked with sour marinara, with a mix of olives, onions and basil on top. Looked like less than $3 worth of ingredients. So be it, I figured, and I brought a slice to my lips. It was unappetizing. Okay, no big deal. It happens. I couldn't stomach the taste, so I didn't eat it. What shocked me was the owner's refusal to take the item off my bill or even to "split the difference." He explained that it was perfectly good, even if it wasn't to my taste. With a self-satisfied smile, and without even a hint of apology, the owner explained that he could not make any adjustment to the bill even though I had returned my order, having eaten no more than a bite or two. In reply, I suggested that this is no way to run a business. He smiled and proceeded to offer me a free cookie as a peace offering. How sweet of him, I thought. Or rather, I thought, I shall not be returning here again.

While the food is great, the crap shoot that is the quality of the service, makes it difficult to plan an outing here. I have had poor service from when the food comes out of the kitchen, to being ignored by the wait staff to a rude cashier and after tonight have decided that no food is good enough to have to deal with the lack of consistent good service.

Absolutely poor service-- they were rude, and overcharged us. And the food is only mediocre.

Don't get me wrong, the food is tasty and I appreciate the vegan menu, but having worked in the restaurant industry for some 20 years and managed some of the most successful restaurants in the city, I was left completely floored by my experience today. I made the mistake of sitting at the bar (I love eating at a bar usually, Ocean is amazing for this), where the waiters stood on both sides of me talking over me and playing on their iphones. It was very strange, as if they didn't want me to sit there and were trying to chase me off by being loud in my ears and talking over my food. My meal sat at the end of the bar, several feet from me, for quite a while before someone finally brought it to me (I wasn't sure if I was supposed to get it or not?). As I took my first bite I double checked with the waiter that my salad was gluten free, he told me it was not, so I couldn't eat it. Long story short, they charged me for it and wrapped it for me to take home to someone else, then recommended a dessert to take home for a friend's birthday which completely melted into liquid in my bag in the 90 degree weather. And the owner told me he told the staff to never take anything off of the check for an unhappy customer, and that I should have chosen a different dessert. But my gosh, I don't know your product! I have to rely on your expertise and recommendations, I'm not psychic unfortunately. I ended up paying 30.00 but ate only one side of chickpea fries. The food is good, but they are lacking in restaurant skills, unhelpful, confrontational and avoiding, and the waitstaff is poorly trained as a result.

Beautiful place, decent prices; the food and service were perfect. We were given 2 free (and delicious!) cookies just because the waitress thought we were nice people. Great variety of gluten free food (my friend died when he tasted the grasshoper cookie sandwich), and everything on the menu is vegan. Best place we went during our 3 days trip in NYC, it was worth it! And Central park is only a few blocks away if you wanna go for a picnic :)

I've been here & ordered from here several times in the years I've lived on the UWS. I like their GF baked goods since I'm a celiac as well as their bowls of steamed veggies. But like so many others, the service is absoultely deplorable. All I can say is thank god there are now other options in the neighborhood like Blossom Uptown and Organic Avenue. Anyone who's been to enough fastfood joints knows that it's always faster - not to mention more sanitary - if the person taking your order & your money isn't the same person actually making your food. Like other reviewers, I've seen the staff sitting around shooting the breeze as if they're bored out of their minds, like there isn't a line of hungry people waiting for a table or to place a take out order. I've also been placed on hold for more than 5 or 6 minutes while placing a phone order. I get the whole thing about creating an environment where people want to work, where the boss views their employees as whole human beings and not semi-robots, etc. But none of this should come at the expense of your customers. The bottom line is that you have a business to run and your business should first and foremost focus on your customers before the self-actualization of your employees.
