In a city full of great Mexican restaurants, and an area full of great restaurants, I have no idea how you justify poor service and unimpressive food. We ate there last night and it was packed because of the Halloween holiday. There was 1 waiter, 1 busser, we waited 20 minutes to order (during which time our waiter was SITTING at the bar) we had to ask for EVERYTHING at least twice, and it was an incredibly frustrating experience. The food was mediocre. The bill was enormous. LOVE the space though!

    Authentic Mexican restaurant in Soho

The restaurant is cozy and you definitely get a welcoming feeling once you walk inside. The margaritas are delicous and the home made tortilla chips are addictive! The menu is not very expansive but does include some authentic dishes that would appeal to carnivores and vegetarian dishes alike. We ordered the quesadilla trio as our appetizer and all three were delicious as were the accompanying salsas. As my entree I decided to order the vegetarian choice which was the poblano pepper stuffed with sweet potatoes. I honestly was not impressed. I thought the execution was kind of sloppy and the dish overall just lacked oomph. I had no problem with the spiciness, as I love hot food. I just felt the dish would have been tastier and a better value if it was either stuffed a la "chile en nogada" which is a meat and dried fruit stuffing or perhaps a slightly more complex vegetarian stuffing. My husband, however, ordered their version of steak frites and it was absolutely delicious! The meat was very tender, well seasoned and the fries it was served with were tasty. Our server was very attentive as was service by the staff overall. I would definitely go back and take friends as it seemed the sort of place you could really enjoy with a group of people. This is a much needed addition to the neighborhood.

    Wonderful food & warm atmosphere!

The food is truly delicious, creative, though authentic, and very fresh and served with beautiful presentation and thoughtfulness. The seafood ceviche with light citrus flavor and avocado creme, the duck enchiladas with an almond mole and the chile poblanos were fantastic! Great bar with many tequilas to choose from. The atmosphere is warm and full of life and the service, as well as the owners, are very friendly and attentive. I will definately return again and again to this gem of a place!

    A Real Jem in Soho

When my friend told me that she wanted to go to a new Mexican place, I wasn't really in the mood for it. However, when we arrived, things quickly changed!! The bar at this place is great. Loads of Mexican masks on the wall. A real talking point! The sangria was served from big glass casks and was really fab. We didn't have a reservation and there was a wait for a table, so we ate at the bar. Excellent, excellent food! We shared the ceviche was incredibly fresh with an avocado cream layered through it. Very tasty. The highlight for me was the Duck Enchilada. I had not tasted anything like this before. It was in a Mole sauce which was very rich, but absolutely delicious! Finished the meal with a Fig Pannacotta (can't remember the exact name!) which was sublime. Cannot wait to go back. PS. agree with last post, bartender was v v v cute!

    Take it from a Mexican

I have been to Papatzul a couple of times and each time has been a great experience. Being a native of Mexico City I can definitely say the flavors are authentic. The Almond mole reminds me of the moles found in the market. The tlacoyos are the real thing! The margaritas were great, made with Herradura Silver. Not only the food is delicious the place feels and looks great. I really recommend this place.

    Haute Mexican Good For ME

Found a great little Mexican restaurant in Soho last night. It's the kind of place you just want to hang out. Great bar (very cute and charming bartender, made me feel like a princess, boyfriend jealous.) The owner has turned Mexican food into Mexican cuisine and done it with flare and innovation--par example, the ceviche. Beautiful space, great music, attentive and friendly staff and owner, hip bar (awesome Margs) and an impressive Tequila list. Soho hasn't been much of a draw for me of late, but this place could change that. Get your place at the bar before the crowd arrives. A place this cool can't stay quiet for long.

    Great authentic mexican

I've eaten at Paptzul twice now and have had great experiences both times. The duck enchiladas were fantastic - a slight hint of almond in the mole sauce was delicate and amazing. The seafood ceviche appetizer had just the right amount of citrus. The lamb was exquisite. The stuffed pepper was also fabulous. The owners are so sweet. The margartitas, though pricey, were excellent A great place for authentic, classy Mexican.
