sweet tooth!
If you have a major sweet tooth and are in the mood for mexican, people, I IMPLORE you, order the duck enchiladas in mole sauce, and then the mini chocolate flan for dessert. MY GOD THESE TWO DISHES ARE AMAZING!!!

Fast-food Mexican?
Margarita and sangria were just off and tasted too much of alcohol rather than better flavors. Guacamole was just ok. fish tacos were very mayonnaise-y and piled high with piles and piles of lettuce. The fish in the tacos, by itself, was good and nicely cooked. The scallop mini tostadas were kind of tasteless, after scraping the "tamarind" sauce off the top (the sauce tasted more like prune puree). The masa cakes with chorizo were pretty good, and our favorite thing. Have been wanting to try this place simply because we hadn't been, but now see no reason to go back or to advise going. Nothing special.

mexican in decadence
I used to go to this place all the time for margaritas and guacamole, after about year and a half of enjoying probably the best margarita in the city I found out that the bartender responsible of those delicious drinks left to open his own place. I think the quality of the margaritas went straight down, and the atmosphere isn't good now. It's sad for me, I feel really bummed out. PD. Does anyone knows where is him and his margaritas?.. please.

Solid from my one experience
A friend of mine told me this place had decent fish tacos so I decided to give it a try even though the reviewer below thought they were sub par. I ordered to pick up as I work nearby and was pleasantly surprised. Good fish, nicely spiced sauce and slaw and a solid, not big, but not small portion. Staff and bartender were friendly, I'll definitely go back though I don't think I'd trek across town for the place.

finally
i am torn between telling people how great this place is so it stays open, or keeping it for myself. i can't beleive the bad reviews. finally a mexican restaurant run by people who take pride in mexican food, and don't try to serve tapas portions (wrong country people!) with only one goal in mind: money. the food is delicious, incredible value, the portions are real meals, the people are so kind, the bartender makes really great cocktails. i can't say enough, it really is a find. and its charming and incredibly clean and you can actually get a table. the food is inventive, it is not limited to the same four ingredients wrapped a different way....its not in midtown..what more can you ask for???

Fish tacos are borng
I love fish tacos but these were bland and pretty terrible. They do give you a lot of fish though alittle too much.

I don't get the other poor reviews
I'm sorry to hear that other people had bad experiences at Papatzul as I have been a regular customer for a long time and only see it getting better and better. I know for a fact that they don't even have a microwave, that their chips are made fresh daily, that their bartender is from Mexico city and takes great pride in his Margaritas. I've taken friends who have traveled extensively throughout Mexico who adored the food at Paptzul. As for the appetizers being small...? I regularly make a meal of the Tlacoyos or quesadillas or the Ceviche because the portions are generous. Just because they don't automatically drop chips on the table is hardly a point to criticize. NYC is chock full of some of the lousiest Mexican restaurants I've ever eaten at. Papatzul is a welcome addition to the restaurant scene in NYC
