My wife and I visited this delightful little Portuguese restaurant last week and enjoyed our meal very much. The food was terrific and my wife said that it was as good, if not better, than the food in Portugal where she lived for 31 years. The atmosphere was just like a typical eatery in Lisbon (Alfama) and the service from Caterina was friendly and perfect. We can say with all honesty that this was the best meal we had in New York during our vacation and would recommend it highly.

i have been coming to pao for about two years now. the excellent food, reasonable prices, cozy ambiance and fun, open people have kept me coming back. it's an exceedingly friendly place where you can feel comfortable walking in unaccompanied and having a drink at the bar, but it's also great for a cozy candlelit dinner. in the summertime the outdoor seating creates another fun and congenial atmosphere. in the winter pao is great if you'd like to stop by and warm up over a drink or a bowl of soup---but you might end up staying for the remainder of the evening! the wines are excellent, and at $8 a glass, easy on your pocketbook as well. stop in sometime and you just might wind up a regular!

Came here for dinner one night and was pleasantly surprised with meal. The flaming sausage was better then I'd expect. I had the sea bass which was wonderfully pan seared with a delicious crispy skin and came with an enticingly good broth. I also tried the bacalhau and was marveled by it's flavor. Every time I've had it in the past at other restaurants it's been too salty, this one was perfect and changed my opinion on the dish. The atmosphere is a little cramped, but warm and casual. The service was good, our wine glasses were never empty and a couple dishes had table side preparation which adds a nice touch to the experience. I will definitely go back again.

... But the food quality could have been a bit more. Had the steak and snapper. Snapper was quite tasty. Steak cut was rather uneventful ... Disappointing since the sauce and whipped spinach was pretty good.

Friendly staff, good wine recommendations, cozy atmosphere makes Pao a desirable dining experience. Not to mention the home-cooked dishes ... the scallops are the best I've ever had and last Saturday I had sliced roasted Lamb on a bed of potato puree along with thinly sliced carrots just like mom used to make! My sister had rabbit and she raved about it as well ... If you want to feel at home, this is the place to go ... always a pleasure!

This is the only restaurant in NYC with Fado music and it's on Wednesdays only from 8:30pm-10:30pm. The show and dining were good and the place is small but was cozy. We were in a group of 6 and all had bacalhau a braz for entree. We shared appetizers such as pasteis de bacalhau and salada de polvo which were also very good. We were a bit disappointed that they did not have "vinho verde" and "pasteis de nata" in their menu.
