Terrible
To start with, our waitress/bartender was very surly and rude. I figured Ok, no biggie as long as the food is good. It wasn't. Steak tasted bad and the potatoes were soggy and undercooked. Terrible place!

Better than expected
I didn't think that a Portuguese restaurant in Manhattan would be good, but I was pleasantly surprised. The food was amazing. The Caldo Verde was as good as my grandma used to make. The service was wonderful, too. I recommend this place to everyone.

Perfeito!
Best Portuguese food in the city! The bacalhau a bras is to die for - better than I've ever had in Portugal. The acorda com gambas is also outstanding. I try to take as many of my friends there as possible, and they are always impressed. Great selection of Portuguese wines too. Try it out - you won't regret it.

Some hits, some misses
Walked in on a whim on a Saturday night, and was seated promptly outdoors. The duck, plum & endive salad was nice, although the duck was a little overcooked. A special entree that evening was a very tasty suckling pig. The chips were done just right, with only a few soggy pieces. The broccoli mousse, on the other hand - forget it. One bite of that side dish was one too many for me. It's a nice place, very dark in the dining room. Serving bread in little flower pots? Cute. Presenting the menu in a picture frame? Tacky. If you're in the area, it's a nice place to try some different flavors.

Not recommended
The ambiance was nice: music, candles, open to outside. However, the food was not good. They forgot to bing us bread (thats fine) Portugesa , or whatever the name was, salad felt like I am eating dry grass off my front yard (no, I never tried that). Cold squid appetizer tasted like cold squid as is, and again a lot of dry grass...Shel fish pudding was not too bad surprisingly, but shrimps had their shells on and it didn't feel like a complete tasty dish, cause I had to spit out shells. Desserts were mediocre (I took few cause I was still hungry) and even coffee was so watery...they should be ashamed of it.

Very unmemorable.
First, when I tried to make a 7pm res I was told they only had 7:15. When we got there, the place was totally empty. Then we were seated near the bathroom and kitchen (albeit the place is really small) while most of the tables remained empty the whole night. The apps and main courses were ok but the deserts were a disappointment. I had such high expectations considering all the reviews but I won't go back to Pao again.

Just like home!
My coworkers and I were looking for a good place to order from..we were trying restaurants all in the Soho area with reasonable prices and I came across this Portuguese restaurant. Being Portuguese, I was not sure what to expect. The food was amazing! The calde verde is exactly like my mother's. My coworkers (who are not Portuguese) loved it too! The price is extremely reasonable and the service is great. The restaurant is very cute and intimate..perfect for a date or with a group of friends. Go to Pao! and you will enjoy a traditional Portuguese meal, at it's best!
