    An Average Place

With so many very good reviews, I went to this restaurant expecting much more than they offered. This is a fairly standard place with typical Italian food which can be found all over NY. The salads were well presented, but lacked zest. The cheese served with the three color salad was tasteless. The pastas were only ok and the vongole were not cooked properly. Some were stuck to the shell and that is never a good sign. The dessert was all show, but i never felt that the calories were worth the effort. We liked our server. She tried hard. All in all, I felt that there wasn't a real chef in the kitchen, but someone waiting to be a movie star. An experience like this usually makes me eat at home for a while because I think why bother spending my money and time for mediocrity.

    Solid Italian in Theatre District

What a surprise to find this spot so close to our hotel (The Royalton). We made reservations and were seated immediately. The artichoke salad was wonderful, the salmon carparccio devine and the pasta with veal ragu heavenly. The fish entree with tomatoes and olives was extremely fishy for the type of fish so would pass on that next time. Desserts were good and a decent bottle of red for a reasonable price. Our waiter was a bit snobby, ignoring the finished dishes until he could direct a bus boy to clear but that so minor in an overall good experience. We would do this again when in the city.

    Nice xmas dinner

Spending a great week over Christmas in NYC with my family was made more enjoyable by having dinner here at al Doge. It was one of the few places open we called and glad it was. My family, 3 of us, each had an entirely different style and all were great. Fish was not over cooked, my pasta was delicious, and my daughters salad with chicken and apples was even better than it looked. Have to rate the flan as ok. My daughter chose wisley with a berry tart. Nice comfortable classic Italian environment You won't miss on this one.

    I'd do it again in a heart-beat!

Had the pleasure of lunch at al Doge on 12/15 and it was the best! My recommendation is to get there before the noon hour- because it fills up fast and it quite congested. But that's New York! The Risotto Laguna was the best ever! Great service despite the pre-holiday crowds. Pleasant waiters/waitresses and I highly recommend this wonderful place. It's clear I am not alone in my thinking judging from the large crowds! Don't miss it!

    Perfect pre-theatre eatery!

Like the previous reviewer, after reading the reviews, we went there pre-theatre. The food was excellent, the service was spot-on and speedy, and the atmosphere was very good with the restaurant jam-packed. The tables were close together but not noticeably so as to interefere with our meal or be too noisy. All in all, a very enjoyable experience and we'll definitely being going back there again!

    Wonderful restaurant!

What a surprise. Thanks to the reviews I read on this site, I decided to give this place a try as it was close to the theatre we were going to. I also requested an upstairs seating as suggested. What a treat. We were there on Friday May 27th, pre-theatre, and had a great experience. Despite the busy time, we were never rushed. Our waitress was attentive and prompt. She even gave us time between the end of our meal and ordering dessert as she knew we had some time before the curtain. Our meals were excellent, from salad to dessert. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you're in the mid-40's east of 7th Ave. So convenient, great decor and service, delicious food. I will definitely return in the future.

For good atmosphere, pick time wisely

This place has great food, but if you pick a really busy time to go (pre or post theater rush) you're going to have to be happy with just the food because you'll have to yell to have a conversation. Tables are placed really close together too so you kind of don't get your personal space. But if you go when it's not as crowded, this place is fantastic. Great food, shared plates. A great place to go with a group. The steak is particularly good.
