Onegin

I'm Russian 30 something and live in Manhattan. Initially we were going to Nasha Russia but our insider friend strongly suggested to go to Onegin instead. We started with borscht (exceptional), pies with spinach (just like my Mom's), entrees were Beef Str.(my fave always) and Sea Bass (fresh and delicious). I also enjoy coffee (lattes/capp. are right on). Service was excellent. i can't wait to go back. Well worth the money spent. I love Onegin!

So disappointing! I read so many wonderful reviews of this place and after making reservation to Onegin was thrilled to go. The service was very good but the food left something to be desired. Perhaps my expectations were too high but the beef stroganov were unexciting and the chiken kiev was not exactly as earth shattering as the reviewers would have us think. I will admit the pickles and mashed potato here are wonderful but seriously as a russian restaurant great mashed potato and pickles is the last they should provide.. Chicken Kiev was blah, Salmon was meh, and the appetizers were ehhh Ultimately the overall price tag of the meal was a slap in the face considering the quality of the food. Perhaps I was expecting too much but for a lot of money I expect to walk away from a meal completely bowled over by how amazing the whole experience was.

I'm a little torn about this place. I want to give them a decent review for the venue, but their food just doesn't make the cut. On the one hand the restaurant is very nice, and the waiters are engaging and friendly (except for when they disappear and there's nobody nearby to flag down). But as a person who likes my food to have flavor (I know, I'm in the minority), the dishes here are a very bland. They should probably sit down and taste their own entrees once in a while to make sure they're up to par. Also, if you're looking for a full  russian-food  experience, this is not the place to get it.Very bad crowd very noisy crowd and  for the prices of the food and drinks  its a lot of the better places
