how this place gets clientele is beyond me

I first went here with my dad several months ago under his assertion that it was delicious, affordable seafood. My dad usually has good taste, so I expected something decent at the very least. I ordered the blackened salmon and received instead what appeared to be a salmon filet with salsa dumped all over it. I decided, what the hell, I'll give it a shot -- but regretted not sending it back after a few bites. Yes, the salmon was fresh and cooked decently, but it was so bland (and the topping so similar to canned Tostitos salsa) that I ended up eating just my side of rice and my dad's buttered salmon. His filet was equally bland in my opinion, but at least it didn't have watery salsa stuff on it. More recently, my dad decided he wanted to return for his birthday. I dreaded the idea but of course went along without protest, and hoped that maybe my last experience was a fluke. It was not. I tried my Mom's shrimp cocktail for starters, and it was underwhelming. The cocktail sauce was an impotent, ketchup-y concoction with no texture and almost no horseradish (this is a grave error; a good cocktail sauce should just about clear your sinuses). I ordered the blackened salmon filet again, this time politely requesting that it be blackened with spices and not topped with some strange mixture of tomatoes, peppers, and onions. I got what I wanted, but the filet wasn't really any more phenomenal than what I could get at a chain restaurant. And it was rendered inedible by the pin bones left in it -- my brother had the same problem, and was equally disappointed. Never, in a restaurant, have I had to pick pin bones out of my fish before; it ruined the dining experience. Any good seafood place removes them with pliers before cooking because they know 90% of the people there don't want to spend their dinner removing the tiny buggers that tend to get caught in your windpipe. Some fishmongers are into it. Most people, however, are not. The only good thing about this place is the garlic bread, which is served warm and deliciously crispy, greasy, buttery, and loaded with garlic. I tipped the usual 25% despite the poor service, as the servers seemed stressed and overworked, but I could not bear the thought of ever returning here. I could get better food in the frozen section of a grocery store. Even the reasonable prices aren't worth the money.

    Lunch Horror

Had Lunch with friend today around 2pm. Place was emptying out, but we waited for our waitress for 15 minutes, then waited for our food for 35 minutes. Service was bad, no eye contact, no information, until we begged for our food. When it came; my fish was undercooked and had to be returned. waitress never appologized, in fact she was rude and nasty to us. Food was bland and the service bad. Place might be better at night; but be forewarned!!!

    Great Value

We had the $14.95 pre-fixe on a Friday evening. Our salads and garlic bread were delivered within seconds of our seating- even before ordering. Both were good. Both of us ordered the tilapia, and it was very tasty. The meal also included soup, a starch or vegetable, and ice cream and coffee. The price also included a glass of wine or champagne. The service was attentive and efficient. The meal was very good. The value was superb.

    Burned!

Picked up their burger and fries and chicken alfredo two weeks ago and I was horrified. I ordered the burger medium-well, and apparently they don't know what that means. The outside was charred and the inside was all red. Even the bun was burnt! The lettuce was wilted and the tomato was not at all fresh. The fries were also very disappointing. They were definitely the frozen ones and undercooked as well. The chicken alfredo was another disaster. The chicken was rubbery and the past overcooked. The sauce was very bland. The saving grace was the garlic bread! I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone!

Poor service & a lecture - no thanks!

I went to One Fish Two Fish last night with two friends and it will be the last time ever. I have been here a number of times in the past four years - after looking all over the city for a decently-priced (and well-prepared) seafood restaurant - and have alwyas had an outstanding experience, until last night For one, there were very few people in there, yet our waiter kept disappearing for long periods of time from the moment we sat down, and he was very curt. - It took him 15 minutes to serve us the complimentary water, bread and salad. - Another 15 minutes to take our order: one fish/chips, two crab leg meals (with different starches) and some drinks. - Fish/chips arrive (cold) and one crab meal. We assume the waiter is headed back to pick up the other. - 10 minutes pass, we finally flag down the waiter and ask him where the other crab meal is... he had forgotten to "put it in" to the kitchen - 20 mins later, it arrives, the other plates stone cold - We order white wine it arrives unchilled and marshy - we skirt any notion of dessert. - The bill arrives with a 15% service charge. We call over the manager and list point-for-point how terrible our experience was and ask why there is a service charge for 3 people! He said after 10 p.m. the charge goes into effect - keep in mind it is about 10:15 and we have been there since 8:30. We demanded the late crab meal and the service charge be taken off the bill. We managed to get a 40% discount - the service charge still appeared on the bill but was allegedly part of the discount. This came after the manager tried to lecture us on how people "some nights just don't work out for the best" - unbelievable! Our absent(minded) waiter was completely unapologetic for his rude behavior and poor service. Considering how often I have been here and have always recommended it to people looking for delicious and well-priced seafood, this was a major slap in the face! It would have been one thing if it were very busy, but there was next to one one in there, save for a party in the adjoining bar.

    Good for brunch

Our first experience at One Fish was for dinner. We didn't go back for awhile due to slow service. The last couple of times have bben for brunch. They have good specials for about 11 dollars including alcohalic beverages. The service was fine. We found the food pretty good, at a reasonable price. Including drinks, an outstanding value.

    average at best

Despite many negative reviews, decided to give it a try it anyway. Service was fine, and prices seemed reasonable, however food was nothing special. I tried the add-on crab legs which would have been excellent except for the artificial butter it was served with, which totally ruined it. Garlic bread was greasy and serve yourself salad was messy. Tons of better seafood places on the upper east side - will not go back.
