    Delivery From Ollies

    First of all, let me say that anyone who thinks of tipping $1 should be totally ashamed of themselves. Particularly on delivery, you should be tipping MORE than the %15. I don't think that's right to treat people like that. Now, usually Ollies is great, and they take credit cards, and deliver to me way up on 152nd. However, I have a major beef with them on this point, which has happened twice, both times resulting in my going without food and their going without getting paid. They sometimes have a delivery person who refuses to get out of his car and wants me to go down to the street and get my food there. Now, maybe its just me, but I have never encountered this with ANY other delivery person, from Ollie's or elsewhere, and I order in all the time. It's DELIVERY- I expect it to my door. And I tip well, usually $5; I think that's quite fair, being as my order is generally $14-20. What makes this so much worse is that there is no advance notification of this, and when I order delivery, I might be in various stages of presentability and dress, and what is fine to open the door to take food is sometimes entirely different from what is fine to go down to the sidewalk in. If I felt like going "out," I'd go to the corner store. But at least if they gave me a head's up when I ordered, I'd know to expect it. Instead they call and say they are here, downstairs, have me scramble to get more clothes on, and then I go down 5 flights of stairs, only to find they are not "there" (there being presumably at the door), and then going back upstairs, only to be called again insisting that they are in fact "there", only this time "there" is now specified as being in the street, sitting in his car..... and they want me to go BACK downstairs. I don't live in a bad neighborhood, but if their delivery person is scared to get out of the car, they should send someone else. Everyone else comes to my door. What is that about??

    Carryout Only - the waiters are jerks

    Get delivery or carryout to avoid the jerk watiers... the food is ok...but you are probably just a student getting a fast meal...so who cares? I would love to boycott the whole restuarant....why is Columbia University allowing them to be the restaurant at the front gate across the street? they suck! right next to the overpriced grocery store Morton Williams -- which should also get bulldozed.. If you are vegetarian or vegan they have 3 super healthy things that are steamed. ...but they cost like 8 bucks

    $1 tip?

    In reference to the review directly below: How can you even think about tipping a deliveryman 5%, and then get annoyed that he wouldn't accept it! too would be insulted if you attempted to tip me $1! These people live off these tips. Stop embarrassing yourself.

    We at the job have decided to boycott

    I have never eaten in the restaurant. We used to order to deliver to the job because they are the only neighborhood chinese restaurant that make scallion pancakes that are delicious, but we've decided to boycott. It was one of those days when everyone was short on cash but ordering out was still cheaper than buying food from the cafeteria and cleaner that the cart on the corner. The order came to approximately $23, not a lot of money by any means but what we had at the time. We even came up with an extra $1 for the tip :) Well, when the delivery man showed up 1/2 hour later (usually takes Cafe Swish 15 minutes and they are right next door dot Ollie's) I went downstairs to give him the money. He wouldn't take it because it was only a $1 tip. I told him that was all we had...he called the restaurant and after speaking to them in Chinese for a bit handed me the phone. The lady on the phone told me that we couldn't tip him with $1. My first instinct was to tell him right then and there to forget him and the food but the lunch wasn't just for me so I decided to confer with my co-workers first and told him to wait. They decided it was too late to order lunch from somewhere else so they dug around and came up with another $1 to get get the lunch. We haven't ordered from them since. One of my co-workers said she had gone to the restaurant with her daughters and left a $1 tip on the table because that was all she had...the waitress followed her and told her to keep her money, rolled her eyes and walked away. I miss the scallion pancakes but their attitude is sickening and I refuse to give them my money for that oily food.

    Poor service

    I quite like the restaurant due to its food, atmosphere and proximity to Columbia. Nonetheless, the service is terrible. If you ever do something that delays their time, they will look at you differently, grunt or even give you a rude answer!!! I don't plan to go back to this restaurant. In addition, there are other good options close by that treat you muuuuuuuuch better!!!

    It was fantastic food - the staff is a little "hurried" but they leave you alone so it doesn't really matter.

    Do they want customers?

    The food isn't spectacular at Ollies but I occasionally eat here b/c it is open late and across the street from Columbia. I have noticed the huge decline in ratings for this location. I believe the problem is a result of the way the customers are treated. While they've never been friendly, they have gotten so rude over the past few years. It's almost like they don't want customers. I don't understand how they would behave like they do and expect people to return or stay without walking out. I walked out the other night b/c i just couldn't take it any longer. i walked in at midnight (they close at 2AM) b/c i was up at columbia and it was open. the minute i walked in, they told me 'cash only'. when i asked them if this was a new rule or if the machines were broken, they wouldn't answer. perhaps they didn't understand but after i politely stood there (looking confused) for about a minute waiting for them to answer, they said it was ok. i'm guessing they like to close down the credit card machines 2 hrs before closing and just expect the customers to comply. it's kind of crappy but if they were nicer in general and didn't behave as others have described here, i might be able to forgive it. so, as they told me it was okay, i walked out. i don't need any favors from them. i have to tell you that not one table was taken in that restaurant. there was one person waiting for an outgoing order and that was it. this is very rare for ollie's to be empty at midnight during the semester. they are digging their own hole after they spent tons of money to renovate.
