I have been to Todd English's Olives many times. I get the 5 course tasting menu wich for only 72.00 (Wine paring-30.00) is well worth the money. The place is very cute and has some space. The only thing I don't like about the place is the bar. It is right in the front and can get a bit loud. Other than that I LOVE this place a lot. I highly recommend it. (Just ask for a table near the kitchen not the front)

My husband and I have eaten here a number of times. Each time we are surprised how good the food, service and drinks are. The place has a very good vibe and the service is professional and unobtrusive. I highly recommend it. The vanilla Souffl? dessert is to die for!
You don't go here for for the food. You go here for the pretentious scene. The food was mediocre and overpriced. The presentation is great, but the quality isn't anything special. Also, after spending a lot of money and the restaurant was half empty, but it wasn't late, I got the distinct impression that the staff didn't want us to linger. And if you need to use the restroom, it's a hike.

As native New Yorkers, my girlfriend and I have been to hundreds of restaurants in the Manhattan area. We decided to go here on our friend's recommendation. The dinner started out okay, the bread was probably the best in the city, then came our squid and octupus appetizer. We literally felt like Olive's had pulled our food directly from the East River and put it on our plates, it was as if we were eating something from Fear Factor. Then came the main course, my lovely girlfriend's Swordfish was below average. My Gnocci was very unappetizing. However, when we told the waitress she did take it off the bill which was pretty nice.

The best thing about my dinner at Olives was the olives and bread they put out before we ordered. We started off with the Char grilled squid & octopus that was so thick & the tentacles where so long I thought I was going to be pulled out of my chair. The short ribs where cold and the green bean casserole that accompanied it consisted of THREE green beans (I kid you not). My dinner guest had the Ravioli SIX flat oily pieces for $23. All in all the meal was overpriced, the portions where tiny except for the giant squid & unless your going there on an expense account, I wouldn't recommend it.

On our last trip to NYC we stayed at W Union Square, since our flight from SFO had been delayed we arrived quite late. No problem for the staff at Olives, a quick call from the concierge secured us a table in the busy dining room with laughably short notice. We thought that the tables were arranged a little cosily for the style of dining, but the decor was tasteful and the place was spotless. Then came the food - the bread-basket was simply enormous, with what must have been 5 varieties, all warm and scrumtious, particularly the soft olive-bread which was wet with olive oil - a mediterranean dream! The wine list was adequate, with a few surprises. The appetizers were a good size, as were the mains (entrees to you Americans). But is was the dessert that really stole the show - if you only go to Olives NY to have the vanilla souffle, then you won't come away disappointed. We will return on our next trip.

Going to Olive's was a big deal for me. The lounge was wonderful (it made us feel like Sex in the City) and the drinks was good. Once we got seated I thought the restaurant was too dark. It's a beautiful structure that is not being seen so I felt I was missing the character of the restaurant. The food was tasty but the portions was small (I like to eat and feel like I ate something) but the quality of the food was good. The service was sweet the first day I went very helpful and not to chatty but chatty enough to make you feel welcome. I went back the next day and the server was not as nice the server seemed to be there and that was it. The food was still good. I would go back again because this is really a nice restaurant to just have a wonderful time and go home happy.
