Surprisingly good food
The food here was pretty good. The chocolate shake had dark chocolate in it and was delicious. I had a veggie burger and foolishly didn't order the sweet potato fries - but the regular fries were standard order but good. The prices were very reasonable. The service is vague but then again it's a local diner so what do you expect. The interior is old and charming in a local diner sort of way. All things considered this is a friendly and tasty place if you're on the upper West side.

Sweet potato fries please!
This place makes the BEST burger in town! It is so good, you don't even need ketchup, lettuce or tomato! And the best side...their sweet potato fries! Absolutely delicious!

Excellent food and service
I've tried many restaurants (both UWS and UES) and Old John's food is excellent and good value. Tastes better than homemade, fresh, delicious, and gourmet. The wait staffs are nice and they remember you.

Excellent coffee shop with great food
This is my favorite place to go for brunch in the neighborhood - excellent food, good service, great coffee and a real NYC coffee shop atmosphere. Their lunch and dinner food is excellent too - try the salads or the grilled chicken club. Delivery is fast and the prices are fair given the quality. They even make coffee milkshakes, which are teriffic.

Hidden neighborhood secret
I have been going here for years, ever since I moved to the neighorhood. I have brought many relatives and friends and they all love it. It has excellent homemade soups and fries. There is all the standard diner food plus excellent entrees that you usually find at more formal places. The staff is friendly and attentive. Plus they deliver. My only complaint is that the breakfast is all al a carte and can be pricey for a diner.

Great diner food
My daughter goes to school across the street, and we eat there fairly regularly since it is close. We live in mid-town, and eat out or order out a lot. I must say that compared to other diners on the West Side (mid-town and upper west side), this place stands out as an underappreciated gem. They make great steaks, chicken pot pies, and burgers and the french fries are home made.
