I never write reviews, but I felt compelled to write this one to counter the false reviews on menupages. The food here is plain and tasteless. Good service, nice people aside, tou should really avoid this place if you want good food

I love New York diners, and when I discovered one this good near Lincoln Center I was instantly a faithful patron. The area is pretty hostile to people who do not want to run up a big tab every time they hear a concert, so Old John's is an oasis --- reliable and friendly and in the evening it takes on more of a restaurant feel. If you are a bit fussy don't go there; if you tend to believe complainers like the ones below, stay away --- and let the rest of us pack in there. If too many people start to love it there will be no getting inside anymore for me and the man who praised the burgers!

If you keep *that* in mind, you'll probably do okay here. Stick to burgers, onion rings, sandwiches ("luncheonette" being in their name and all) and breakfast, and you should be fine. I don't go usually go to a "diner" for steak or italian dishes or anything "fancy," -- at least not in NYC, and where the short menu at Old John's should clue you in to the limits of what they can do well. Their burgers -- beef and turkey -- have been consistently good here, and their onion rings are good too. The kids I've been there with like their milkshakes -- on the thick side and with lots of ice cream.

What can i say? I fell for it. I guess the review below wasn't written by an unbiased diner. I tried this place. And no , it's not bad, but it really is the most average food you'll ever eat. And yes, it is overpriced. If the food was twice as good in the taste department and half price we'd be getting somewhere. Any local restaurant will be less expensive and taste better. But it s edible. So, ifyou're sick and need some bland food that won't upset your stomach this is the place to go

What more can one say? I adore the place! The Food is wonderful, and as for Value, it is simply astonishing, considering especially that this is a restaurant within mere steps of Lincoln Center! The Atmosphere, to me, is cozy and comfortable, yet somehow elegant. And the Service? Within a few visits, the staff were greeting me by name as I made my entrance, had memorized my customary cocktail (right down to my favorite gin!), and even recognized my voice when I phoned for reservations! But more to the point, I have never been served with more care and thoughtfulness at any restaurant, ever, anywhere. I only wish I lived right next door, so that I might dine there every night!

I can't comment on atmosphere, b/c Iv never dined there, but i"ve orderer out quite a few times. The food is just "ok" Not bad, not good, just simply average. And is definitely overpriced for what it is. So if nothing else is open, order from here, but don't expect o get tasty food. Servce is good, delivery is good. But food is just bland, and its not priced to be subpar food. If the dishes were 50% less, I would say"you get what you pay for". But I always seem disappointed after finishing my meal and taking a look at the receipt.

I had dinner at old john's yesterday and I usually go there at least once a month. I find the food great and decently presented for a diner-style restaurant. Burguers are great and so is the grilled chicken sub. Rice pudding is great. It's a great value too...I don't know where other reviewers that complaint this place about being overpriced go for dinner (Mc Donald's or subway maybe...) but this place is inexpensive and very good indeed. Service is also great especially the manager Raoul is very polite and always makes sure I'm served promptly so I don't miss the opera at Lincoln center. highly recommended.
