I have to Old Homestead with my friend for a 8pm dinner. We were seated in the upstairs room. The worst however was the noise: the noise level was more like a pub with people having to shout to understand each other. In terms of the food: everything other than the steak was bland and too saled. It took 60 minutes from the time we orderd to the food arriving. I was ready to leave. It was definitely not worth the wait. The waiters are grumpy but not in Peter Lugger type cool fashion, simply annoying. Old Homestead just needs an update - won't see us again.

Need I say more?! Everything is superb at Old Homestead! The food, the service, and the old New York feel of the dimly lit dinning room. You’ll love this place!

My husband and I dined here last year on our anniversary and loved it. As we live in Brooklyn but had never been to Peter Lugers, we went there for my birthday. Needless to say, this year on our anniversary, it was back to the Old Homestead! We had the signature steak, mushroom caps, the to die for hash browns and the creamed spinach. Between all that and the nice selection in the bread basket, we stuffed ourselves silly! Great food and great service. We won't wait another year before going back nor will be try another place.

I am so surprised at some of the reviews here commenting on the food. I am a huge fan of steakhouses in the city, and while the steak here is not as good as it is at Lugers and, in my opinion, Wolfgangs, which is very close to Lugers, the steaks that I've tried (Porterhouse and Rib-Eye) were extremely tasty and were served hot and juicy and cooked medium rare with an almost crispy outside just like I like it. What this place does excel in over many steakhouses in my opinion is the shellfish appetizers, which I always get. The shrimp are enormous (it says right on the menu no 6 shrimp weigh less than a pound, meaning they are almost 3 ounces each or so) and they taste amazing. The variety of clams are really tasty too. The sides are decent, as tasty creamed spinach and garlic mashed potatoes as you get at most upscale steakhouses. Service is average, waiters are usually attentive and not interruptive or anything. Atmosphere is nice; old school tile floors and wooden tables. The only gripe is the prices, which can get pretty outrageous, not so much the steaks (expensive steaks are expected) but the appetizers and sides and drinks usually amount to an exceptionally expensive bill at the end. But I am still a returning customer for good reason, the food is so good it is definitely worth taking a hit in the wallet for great taste with good company.

We had been over to Chelsea Markets and were starving. Outside of the Old Homestead there was a sign that said $15 lunches. It was early afternoon so we decided that wasn't too bad. We were seated and given menus, at that time we realized this wasn't going to be a fifteen dollar lunch! Rather than embarassing ourselves, we ordered off of the menu we were given. Me and my friend got the petit filet-good but nothing to write home about. My husband got the Kansas City Steak, and when I saw it I figured my husband would be in 7th heaven. Suprisingly he was not that impressed. The rolls they gave us to begin with were rock hard. Service was ok, it wasn't crowded due to the time of day, and we were not rushed at all. Total for 3 meals plus 2 sodas and one beer was over $200. When we got home on my doggy bag they showed 2 addresses- Old Homestead Gourmet, and Old Homestead Restaurant...hmmm...same address...wonder why we weren't asked which one we wanted to be seated at???At that point we assumed that the lunch menu on the front window was for the outdoor dining. Anyhow, I probably won't go back, the food just did not wow me to be worth the price.
