    Still the best

Interesting to see how there are such vastly different opinions on this restaurant. I have been eating here since it opened. Moonen was good, but eventually Gallagher surpassed him I was concerned that Ben Polliger could not live up to his predecessors, but he has. The food here is still the best seafood in New York and the service continues to be top-notch.

Finest elegant seafood in New York

Reading other's reviews, I wonder if I was at the same restaurant. Moonan's replacement, Ben Pollinger, knows his stuff backwards, forwards, inside-out and upside-down. Every dish we sampled was simply exquisite, reaching that point of just perfectly cooked without every appearing rubberily overdone or (what I hate most) gelatinously undercooked. The presentations dazzle, with gorgeous herb purees and reductions providing flavor and eye-appeal. I couldn't find anything to complain about, and that, my friends, is a first for me.

    What happened to this place?

This once very fine restaurant has gone downhill big time, seemingly since one of the original chefs (Rick Moonan) left. While the food is still good (though not as good as it used to be), the portions are ridiculously small and the service just okay. After paying the rather bloated bill, I felt like a sucker and won't be back.

    Another viewpoint

Reading the last few reviews, I could not believe this was the same oceana I have been eating at for years. Yes it is expensive, but the srvice has always been outstanding. And the food IS some of the best seafood served in New York. The couple from Austin Tx who wrote two reviews may just be used to Texas sized portions and the couple who were stared at I dont understand at all, unless they were dressed inappropriately for a restaurant of this calibre.

Hardly Worth a 3.0 Star Rating

This restaurant was recommended by the hotel. We asked for a seafood restaurant with good food and within walking distance of the theatre district. The food was average, the portions small and a brisk walk to the theatre district followed in order to not miss the first act. My dish was overcooked and dry while my wife's was undercooked. I was too embarrassed to ask my guests their impression of the meal. For the price we paid I expected much, much more. I've eaten at many fine restaurants in my hometown of Austin, TX that were well worth a 5.0 Star rating at one-third the price.

Very Disappointed - you can do better

My husband and I recently had dinner at Oceana for our anniversary. It was recommended by our hotel concierge as having excellent food, service and romantic. It was none of these - the room was brightly lit, the server interrupted us in the middle of my husband toasting me for our anniversary (which was quite obvious) to serve us an 'amuse.' Need less to say, we wer not amused. This was unecessary. The appetizers were good , not great, but the entrees were un-memorable. The bass that ny husband had was a very tiny protion and over cooked. The portions were so small that even I was hungry after the meal. The service was somewhat lacking. Not very friendly or attentive and we had to wait for almost 20 minutes to get our check. The dinner was very expensive - $280.00 with tip for appetizers, entrees and one dessert, and we only had two glasses of wine. We went back to our hotel and went to the Concierge floor on which we were staying and ate from their evening dessert and cheese buffet- that's how hungry we were. Needless to say, we would not recommend this restaurant at all.
