Not all it's cracked up to be

This place was highly recommended to us so we had to check it out ourselves. Upon first entering the restaurant we saw the crowd was an elderly one, similar to previous raters' observations. Once seated we had to ask for the wine list, which was grossly overpriced (the corking fee for BYOB was $27!). The service was initially slow despite the place not being filled. How does that happen? We ordered the crab cakes for an appetizer. To their credit, they served the two crab cakes separately so my bf and I had our own dish. As a main course I ordered the lobster pasta. It was a decent portion, but was not a fantastic dish. I have definitely had better. The lobster was fresh, the sauce unremarkable and overall mediocre at best. My bf ordered the lamb ragu. It was ok, but greasy and unoriginal. We shared a chocolate tort for dessert. It was served with gelato that had ice particles in it which made it inedible. The coffee was weak and tasteless. We will not be repeat customers. There is better Italian in NYC!

    Great Place for a Date

I went there recently and thought the restaurant was a great place to bring a date. I couldn't make up my mind on where to go and am glad that I decided to come to Novita. When we first walked in, I was a little thrown off by the older crowd (think 40+) but the concierge put us in a smaller room where two other couples were later seated as well. The atmosphere proved to be great - we were kind of secluded but at the same time it wasn't dead quiet in the place - a good mix. I noticed that in general there is a good distance between all of the tables. The food was really good and the portions were good sized (I had the tuna and she had the salmon). The wine was a little overpriced, but the selection was good. Desert and coffee at the end was a great way to end the dinner. The service was very good although at the very end our waiter disappeared without saying a word and was replaced by another guy. In general I would recommend Novita for a date - I liked it.

    a great night....

Showed up on a Tuesday at 7:30 hoping for a table outside and got one within 20 min. We had a drink at the bar and the service was great. With our very attentive waiter, we ordered our meal. Appetizers were the shrimp and crab salad and a half order of pasta. Main courses were a special roasted fish and the chicken ( a touch bland, but ok). All the food was wonderful, full of flavor and a very nice restaurant.....we will return.

Great with a group or a date

The food here really is excellent. I tend to steer away from Italian because it is often heavy. The portions here are perfect size, the food was not covered in oil or heavy sauces, but was made with delicious and fresh ingredients. Very nice romantic restaurant.

    The best by far

I went to Novita a few nights ago with some friends. The food was great, very friendly staff. The prices were just perfect far cheaper than what I expected to pay. The manager with the Italian accent was just delightful. I will recommend to many people.

    Great date place however.....

Went here for a date and must say the ambiance was quite romantic. However, I was not allowed to wait at my table before my date arrived, even though the place wasn't anywhere near packed. Food was decent but if you are a vegetarian options are limited. Go there to impress your date, but don't go there for anything else.

    Still a great neighbourhood restaurant

The value the service the food are unbeatble in the overpriced Flatiron, Gramercy, Chelsea milieu. I've never had a bad meal there and based on a couple of earlier reviews thought things might have changed. But the breaded veal chop, was outstanding and the service was impecable. I live just down the street....there is a God!!
