Hmmm...
I have thought about going to Nobu for years. We went for lunch, which is a bargain. I got a very nice salad, the best miso soup I have ever had....but, then came the sushi.... what a disappointment. Dry on the surface, dry rice and boring makirolls.

What a treat
We were lucky enough to go to Nobu with experienced guests. They ordered for us, both from and off the menu. The waiter was excellent and his recommendations were perfect. Although the 13 of us ate "family style" and had "side-dish portions" of the food, we were stuffed by the end. It is pricey to eat this way - prepare to spend $100 to $150 per person.

If the stars like it, they can have it!
We went last night to Nobu next door, it was 5 hr wait and somehow we got in to Nobu. Let me just say first that we had 5 different courses....none of the food came at the same time. I mean, during each course, 3 or 4 people didn't have food while others were eating. They brought out our soup after we got dessert, our sushi after dessert, and needless to say, they forgot half of what we ordered. The service was poor and the food was o.k. The fish was the best I have had in NYC, I do have to say that...it was their signature dish, cod. The sushi could've tasted better and the soup had so many different types of mushrooms in it that it had an unpleasant smell. I couldn't eat it. I was with 6 people, only 1 who enjoyed it...but b/c the stars go there. ALL of the portions are small, so they encourage you to share. The fish and tempura sweet potatoes were good, but all of the other items were less than good. This place set us back $75 a person and we were hungry and hr later.

Just Okay
Went for a Restaurant Week lunch - sat right down at the sushi bar without needed a reservation. Got the sushi assortment and... it was just okay. The decor reminded me of Zen Palate or Gobo - similar sort of "coppery wash" effect on the walls. The service was excellent and the dessert - a sesame encrusted sort of cinnamon pudding - was the best thing about the meal. All in all, just okay. Not the best sushi I've ever eaten, certainly not the worst. Worth the hype? I don't know. But now I can say I've eaten there too.

Nobu---Do Not Go Here---Ever!
The BEST food I have ever tasted. Better than sex, better than heroin. If you eat here you will be ruined for life.

I can now say, I've been there
Well, after many years of wanting to eat at Nobu, my husband surprised me with reservations for our anniversary. Needless to say, I was VERY excited until we sat down and ordered. Thank goodness the table next to us was having the omakase, because I had decided that was not what I wanted. The waitress basically suggested differently than we had ordered and so we went along with the recommendations. Our first dish, a sashimi salad was quite exceptional. Our second course, thin layers of white fish in a marinade was not so good. Our next dish was rock shrimp which tasted more like a thicker version of lightly fried popcorn shrimp. Somewhat bland for a coating that advertised as spicy. Next was the only real dish I loved, the miso cod, Nobu's signature dish. Absolutely great! The last dish we had was spicy tuna roll and the salmon skin roll. I would not go to Nobu for sushi rolls....the salmon skin roll tasted way too fishy.....the spicy tuna roll was nothing to brag about for such a high caliber restaurant. Given all of this, I would say the ambience is very "trendy", the service very good, but the food nothing to brag about. All I can really say about Nobu is that I've been there and done it.

Always a fun night with excellent food
I have had the omakase tasting which is incredible and the chef can be creative. Pair it with some sake and it's one of the best restaurant experiences if you sit at the sushi bar. My favorite meal at the table is the miso cod which is the best fish I have ever eaten. I actually crave it on a regular basis. It's expensive but worth it. Make sure you try a sakatini and the lobster salad and the yellow tail and jalepeno sashimi. You won't be disappointed but don't miss the miso cod!
