No 1 Chinese Restaurant

Waiting for your order is an education. The young women who work the counter are pleasant and amazingly efficient - they remember everything and everyone, and can juggle phone calls, in-store orders and packing without a stumble. The chefs work quickly ,and work together well. Even the delivery men grab the orders promptly, with no hesitation or waiting for others in the same block - no wonder the food arrives still hot. The food is certainly adequate. Perhaps the flavors are a bit bland, but the ingredients are quality, and there's no skimping.

Having grown up in Washington Heights I must have had chinese food from most restaurants in the hood. Needless to say, most aren't very good. I heard about this place from my friend and decided to order. I have been ordering from them, exclusively, ever since. Their food is perfectly seasoned and fresh. They have great fried chicken and soups. Their rice is always served hot and steaming and their chicken and brocolli is certainly the best I have ever had. If you want great chinese food at a great price then look no further.

I love this place. When I lived downtown, I quickly tired of chinese food as it was always greasy and comprised of questionable meat. But when I moved up to da heights, I fell in love all over again. No. 1 is GREAT! They always use good quality chicken...nothing "squeaky" when you chew. But truly, I cannot order from them without getting the steamed pork dumplings. And I order from them at least once a week. It's an addiction.

Very few Chinese take-outs can top this for me. The Chinese ladies who take your order are always very pleasant and all speak fluent Spanish which I find impressive. Delivery is at lightning speed! This place is mainly for take-outs. Reminds me of a hole in a wall, no frills kind of place. Customers will keep coming back not for it's atmosphere but for it's great food! My favorite: tie between the shrimp lomein and the shrimp eggplant.

Sorry, folks ... this place is just not very good, and I'm surprised to find it rated the highest for Wash Hts. For some good Chinese, head to Midtown, to Wu Liang Le or Tang Pavilion, or to Chinatown, to Golden Unicorn, for example. It never ceases to amaze me the number of poor to mediocre Chinese (and pizza) restaurants this city can support given the fact that we also have on this island some of the best Chinese food and pizza in the U.S.

That is funny because we think the General Tso's chicken (all white meat) is crack chicken!! But really everything is good. I like the jumbo shrimp w/ green jade, the mu shu is awesome, and all the dumplings are great! I haven't had anything that wasn't good, and we order from there around twice a week! The service is super fast, and polite, and the food is always hot when it gets here. The special combinations, and lunch specials are a great deal, and still enough food for two people!

Top-quality fare in a neighborhood littered with shabby Chinese restaurants that eke out a living by dishing yellow rice, fried chicken and french fries. Number 1's varied menu includes real Chinese rice, white-meat chicken dishes and fresh, tasty veggies. Recommended for takeout and delivery only, #1's delivery people are fast and polite. Very generous servings at a low price. So throw away those other menus now!
