Now I understand the mixed reviews
The range of opinions about Nizza in these reviews from "it's great!" to "it sucks!" baffled me until I ate there. Some of the dishes the pesto pizza and the socca were delicious. The pizza crust was perfect and the toppings were fresh and flavorful the socca was unusual and tasty. If I'd only eaten those, I would've loved the joint. Other dishes, however, were pretty lame. The calamari and potato salad was overly oily and bland. The chick pea fries were also greasy and suffered from a serious texture issue. And the pansoti a ravioli-type pasta stuffed with greens? Well, I wouldn't wish it on anyone. All three dishes were bizarrely flavorless. The service was good and the atmosphere is pleasant. It was packed early on Friday night I'm guessing the repeat customers were there for the pizza. Bottom line: it's not a bad place if you stick to a few selected menu items.

subpar food.
I work in the area and met my wife here for lunch a few days ago. We were drawn in by the decor, and seemingly authentic nicoise/italian menu. Long story short, the Socca is bland, doughy, inauthentic... which I am willing to forgive because we are nowhere near the south of france. When the entrees arrived we were even more disappointed. I ordered a "homemade" ravioli with mixed greens. The sauce was bland and unappetizing and I am convinced that the "homemade" pasta was just frozen dumpling wrappers. Gummy, bland... I would have preferred frozen ravioli over that any day. My wife ordered a ratatouille pizza with a bland flavor, mushy gross consistency. The crust was strange tasting and seemed like some sort of Pillsbury's or Bisquick grocery store variety. I have been living and eating in NYC for most of my life and have been disappointed this greatly by a mean only a few times. Do yourself a favor and look another place to eat.

Great food, but way too loud
I don't understand why this restaurant wants to serve such excellent food in such a noisy environment. It has some of the best food I've eaten in Manhattan at a casual restaurant, and the prices are very fair, but I've stopped going because it's too exhausting to shout at each other over the music. They have rotating music where some of it is reasonable and some of it is super loud pop or even hard rock. It's stupid to have such good food and wine with that kind of frat bar noise level.

Not quite right
After receiving a glowing review from a coworker, I decided to try Nizza before the theater last night. What a disappointment. The service was sub-par and so was the food. We had to ask for bread (and then we were only given two small slices) and the servers were noticable abscent the entire meal. The food was very bland in my opinon. I tried the gnocci, which was highly recomended. A definate disappointment. It was very bland and the portion was a bit small. My friend got the fettichini which was also small and very mediocre. The best thing about this place was the decor. Very soothing and well put together. I would not recommend this restaurant.

Find the South of France in Midtown
Nizza has great food and the menu is unique, offering many dishes you usually have to travel to Nice to enjoy. We had lovely server who was very efficient and lots of fun. The socca is fantastic.

Nizza please!
Nizza doles out above average Italian food at reasonable prices but they made a big mistake when they took the best dish the tuna salad off the menu. This blunder swings the pendulum back in Osteria Gelsi's favor as the best low key Italian in the area. Osteria's atmosphere is less appealing than Nizza's but their superior food and service makes up for it. PS: ask for the tuna salad at Nizza — maybe they will wise up and put it back on the menu.

Just what this area needs
The first night we ate at Nizza we were in a rush and only did salads with a pizza and wines by the glass. Yummm! The second time, on Saturday night, we stayed for three courses (not including dessert). The socca was amazing, I have never tried anything like it. The fava and white bean puree appetizer was good, but if all of the pasta here is as amazing as the pansoti, I will be back for an all-pasta meal. The tomaxelle entree was our favorite and blended an amazing mix of seasoning. Wine recommendations were all on point. Our only gripe was the somewhat rushed service on Saturday night. Was a bit noisy too. All in all GREAT experience.
