bad experience
Ridiculous that in today’s economy, a restaurant completely does not give a damn about customer service. Just got back home, extremely disappointed, after wasting an hour in dealing with a rude and disrespectful staff. Decided to take our five year old to a “cool themed restaurant,” have never been here before and needless to say would never attempt to go back. Expected a nice atmosphere for a family Sunday night out. Called the restaurant, before driving down from the Upper West Side, the receptionist stated that the restaurant opens 5:45, she “checked” the reservations list and said to just walk in. After parking the car, waited in a disorderly line outside for 20min, the extremely rude hostess said no reservation just wait on the side, after 10 more minutes on the side line, she stated that no tables are available until 8:30pm (leaving us with a more than 2 hr wait,) offensively we where asked “will you wait or not?” After leaving, called the restaurant the receptionist unapologetically stated that there are no tables until 8:30, after speaking to the manager, who frankly did not seem to give a damn, the same statement was repeated. In total 1 hour wasted, extremely disappointed that such a restaurant is still open.

Unpleasant
I work in Sales and dine out frequently with clients. I would say I probably do 80-100 dinners a year. This place was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. I was almost embarassed for my clients afterwards. The Short Rib was all fat and the sushi was sub par at best. DO yourself a favor and stay away from Ninja NY.

Good place to go when you're tired of Broadway
My mom and I were trying to find something to do while we were in NYC and I remembered reading about this place way back when it first opened and we decided to go. The online reservation site said it was booked, but when we called the hostess managed to accommodate us as we were only a party of two. The atmosphere was scary (to us at least), and very much like a "ninja castle". Our waitress was very prompt and we were constantly attended to by numerous staff members. Our waitress was Japanese, and was very eager to help me with my own Japanese. The food isn't amazing, and there was far too much for either my mom or myself to finish, but the presentation is really what you're paying for, and all the dishes we had were BEAUTIFUL and at least on par with any chain restaurant. The only part we didn't like was the "magician" who solicited our table and even messed up on his magic trick. Other than that it was fun! I would actually recommend coming here with children, as it's about the same price as some Broadway tickets and is something they'll have a lot of fun with (the waitstaff seems to like children too). Overall a great place to spend an evening out.

It's nice to go here at least once in your lifetime
My fiance took me to Ninja for my birthday and we enjoyed our night. I've read a lot of reviews talking about the quality of the food and sometimes poor service but we actually enjoyed everything. I loved our own little dining room. The food actually came pretty quick, I thought we would be waiting for a while but nope everything came at a good speed. Yes the "ninja" walking around doing cards tricks was not the best, but it was good entertainment while we waited for our food. We had the Batoo Jatsu for an appetizer, it was actually good. I don't really like roasted duck but it was flavorful; even my fiance ate it and he does not like trying new things. We also had a small sake tasting; we've never had sake before. I liked the Diamond Dust sake (it was very light) but my fiance liked the Kirigakure Saizou; it was more "manly." I had California rolls for my entree, I fill up pretty fast so I wanted to have a small dish. There was nothing special about them. My fiance had the Bonfire, which was lamb. It was a little too rare for me but it tasted good. I wasn't too crazy about the sauce they used; it had too much vodka in it. The potato and cauliflower gratin served with it was good, didn't really notice the cauliflower in it. We had the Ninja Star for a dessert; it was delicious. The "magic" to it was a little cheesy but the cake was great. Overall, I think it is nice to visit a restaurant like this for the experience. We live in New York and we should enjoy all the different types of restaurants in the city.

downhill after you get to your table
Seriously one of the worst meals I've ever had. The best part of the whole thing was the dark path to the table and the private table my date and I were seated at. The sushi menu was very very limited (nothing creative or more exciting than what you can find in the whole foods premade section with the same flavor) We did different tasting menus. My first course was cold and stale even though it was presented and lit on fire in front of me. The rice was cold and worse than what I would expect second day in the fridge left over sushi from Costco to taste like. None of the dishes impressed. I didn't even eat my meat couse as it was luke warm, salty, fatty and covered in congealed mozzarella. Dessert was okay, and had a fun presentation. I agree with other reviewers that the random 'ninja' doing tricks I learned from a kit when I was 9 did not impress either and didn't add to the experience. After dropping the check the server disappeared and my date had to leave the table to find her to pay after waiting almost 20 minutes. Talking about time...the meal took over 3 hours! No wonder you can't get a reservation. All in all not worth the money, which is a shame as the decor impresses and I would come back for that, but not at that food quality at that price point.

don't waste time or money
This was the worst dining experience i have ever had. the food was the worst i have ever had dining out. the atmosphere was just ok and the service was ok. the steak was 65% fat and the salmon was tastless and small. Do not waste yoru time and the elavator is broken and they forgot to show us the scary route. When asked they did and it was nothing. Flat out F!

nice place but not nice food
this is definitely an experience to try out. they have prix fixe menus where you basically pick the price and follow the assortment/variations available. NONE of them are worth the price so it doesnt really matter which you pick. if you want a show then pick the ones with ninja stars next to it. that means there will be a mini performance with the dish. throughout the night the staff were VERY VERY friendly and we found out that NONE of them were japanese. they were either chinese or vietnamese or spanish. ninjas are japanese aren't they ? but anyway, my party was seated right next to the kitchen so we were pretty much neglected because our "ninjas" kept running out of our sight and returned only when food was ready. its a freaky place to go with just 2 people and won't be fun unlesss you go in a group so theres more reaction and more noise and more excitement. the things they do are very predictable but nonetheless its an experience. the food is nothing to p raise about. the effects were pretty cool though. in the beginning they take you through a maze to get to the actual restaurnat. freaky unless you go as fast as you can following the rest of your group. at the end, you have to find your way back up to the elevator. throughout the night random ninjas might try to be funny and scare your group through the random vents/windows in the room you get seated in. (private rooms only, not the public garden room). this meal is NOT worth the price but definitely a one of a kind expeirence. so you should try it with a group of people nonetheless and enjoy it. just dont expect the sushi to be fabulous and the food to be in large portion bc it isnt.
