Best in Soho
Niko is my go to for Japanese in Soho. Ive been there several times, the food has been excellent, the service has gotten a lot better since they opened. Ate there last week, shared some terrific sushi, the fiery roast chicken (top 10 in the city) along with some aps (garlic shrimp was great). Highly recommended.

Save yourself
The food was not merely subpar -- it was the poorest. The oysters were swimming in sauce, likely to mask their less than freshness. The Shishito peppers were burnt (they were meant to be charred). The tofu with truffles contained possibly the worst canned truffles I have ever had the misfortune to taste. The sushi? The fish was off and the rolls tasteless. I've had far better. We tasted and then left it where it lay. The bill for 4, by the way -- and yes, we had saki -- was $750. Please, save yourself. It is too late for us.

Not worth it
You like spicy tuna inside out rolls ? If yes, do not go to this restaurant; They don't do inside out rolls or spicy rolls or shrimp rolls... Staff is very nice, ambiance is cool but you can't get all the rolls that you like...

The only good thing about this place is the food. The wait staff couldn't be more incompetent. I waited 10 minutes for a menu after sitting down. Then it took another 10 to get a drink order placed. Clearly the management needs some guidance on how to run a successful restaurant.

Great scene, good food
First thing you notice is all of the beautiful people. It's most certainly a scene. The food is very good, highly recommend the king crab legs, octopus, fried chicken, short rib, and of course Chef Hiro's sushi. Can't wait to go back.

Good food but service/staff was wretched
Very dismissive staff/management who seem completely disinterested with pleasing the customer. Food was tasty and fresh but for the price, that has to be expected. Promising pedigree chef-wise but I doubt I'll be back soon . . .

I went to Niko shortly after it opened, frankly too soon. There are some serious kinks that need to be worked out and the owners should have waited another month before presenting their product to the public. Empty restaurant and we still had to wait 10 minutes for our table. All the while, there is no heat in the building while it is 30 degrees outside and snowing. We sat at the table in our coats the whole time. After trying to order a scotch, the barman realized he was out of scotch. We found our way to our table on our own and were eventually presented with menus. Only problem is there was no menu inside the cover. The manager came over to check on us and was visibly and audibly disappointed in his wait staff that there were no menus available. We ordered a nice bottle of wine which was dumped into our glasses (about 1/3 of a bottle in each). We asked the waitress to bring us the highlights of the menu which started out with chicken fingers that we had to send back because they were raw inside. A portion of a king crab leg was served that was moderately tasty but soggy. The only potential highlight was the sushi and sashimi platter. The fish was tasty and frankly by that point I was starving. A short rib dish followed that was small, fatty, lacked any real flavor and was totally over powered by a cucumber white wine vinegar salad. We were also served "super rice" which was brown rice with assorted grains and seaweed on top. Again, nothing special and tasted like Uncle Ben's. Last but not least was a desert that I could not put my finger on. It was sort of a dumpling wrapper with a slushee inside. While we waited for our $250 bill, we noticed that there was someone drilling into the floor underneath our feet. Hopefully they were installing heat so that the next customers who had to endure the torture inside would at least be warm! Perhaps Niko may work out its kinks and be a good spot in the future, but thankfully I will not be a part of any such future!
