Murray Hill Diner
Posted by Watch your bill on 11/02/2008
My boyfriend and I have been regulars at the Murray Hill Diner for months, love the food, great value, live in the neighborhood for years. The last few times we paid by credit card we noticed that Murray Hill Diner decided to add on an extra $5 even after we left a cash tip. My boyfriend even scribbles out the tip option on the receipt to avoid any overcharges. So if the bill was $24.00 and the signed credit card receipt was $24.00 our bank statement would say $29. When we confronted the owner (older man with accent) he fought us and was so rude telling us that our bank charged us the extra $5, which is impossible because its the merchant that submits the cost via the machine (which we all know). He kept arguing with my boyfriend telling us he has customers who complain about this all the time and to check back with our bank that the $5 overcharge would be credited back within 6 days. No chance. This happened again 2 more times and we had enough. Its a shame because we loved it there but we will never go back. We only imagine how many more times this has happened that we overlooked. Even the bank agreed that the diner was adding on extra money without our knowledge. Watch your receipt next time you go.

Ate here 5 days in a row last week - couldnt fault the friendly style, massive menu and genuine welcome from the staff once they recognise you. Made our holiday for that authentic, eclectic diner experience one has read about and seen in films! Top place and great mixed atmospher of locals, workers and business types.

I usually only get breakfast from here but I generally have found delivery to be very speedy. The home fries could use a few peppers and onions but apart from that its fine. Most people I have directed there actually liked the pancakes. I haven't tried their entrees mainly because they seem a little expensive (standard diner prices really). I look inside when I'm passing and it seems like a colorful selection of mostly local people.

I stopped by today, my first time ever, simply because I was walking by. The place looks OK, and it was pretty busy in there for lunch. The Chicken Pizzaiola Sandwich caught my eye. The waitress was bland... fairly typical for a diner. But I ordered some juice with my sandwich, and she spent the next 5 - 10 minutes bussing dirty, empty tables. That's just bad service. Lots of places have bad service, so I wouldn't be writing a review if it wasn't for the sandwich, which was mostly small strips of apparently canned tomato and cheese. I had that repeating on me for a while to guarantee I wouldn't forget about it. I'm not one to send things back to the kitchen unless there's a real screw up. In this case, I couldn't tell if it was a screw up, or if their Chicken Pizzaiola is just horrible. But if you have to go to this place, you have no other choice, then don't get this sandwich. And bring an iPod or something to read... bleh.

Boyfriend in Chicago ordered breakfast for me for delivery on a Sunday morning. It was quick, cheap, and the French toast was wonderful. Great value, perfect for breakfast. Came steamy hot in about 15-20 minutes. Guy who took the order was a little tough to deal with apparently.

Me and my wife stayed in a hotel round the corner and went to the Murray Hill Diner early every morning before going of on our New York holiday adventures. The food was good, hearty stuff and the service was exceptional. Friendly, courteous and quick - they made us feel really welcome every day and never let my coffee cup stand empty for more than a few seconds. I loved eating here and I'm going to find it next time I'm in New York.
