Excellent food and service - clean

While visiting New York our party of five had the pleasure of accidentially dining at the restaurant. We hadn't planned on dining there but after a day of shopping just happen to sit outside. The choice could not have been better if we read through 100 restaurant reviews. The food selection was wonderful, service was excellent (servers were knowledgable and pleasant) and the restaurant and bathrooms were exceptionally clean. Our party will go back and I am recommending the restaurants to visitors.

    Refreshing for Little Italy

I have been going to Mottsu since it opened. I absolutely love it. The food is fresh and the staff is great. The manager knows you by name, which you do not get a lot of anymore. I recommend any of the sushi and definitely the spinich in sesame sauce. The menu changes every now and then, thank god, or I would be eating the same thing all the time. Consistant, friendly and good food. I have lived in this neighborhood all my life and with all the commercial restaurants popping up, I think this one is great. I hope it stays around.

    Simply homey!

I love this place. Its simple decor, good food, and friendly staff never fail to calm me down after a hectic day at work. The sushi is fresh, high quality, while the cooked dishes are good. The price is right. The person who compares this to Blue Ribbon is off the mark -- the two restaurants are of such different price range!

    Not recommended

The quality and the portions are no where near Blue ribbon, Tomoe or Yama's. They were just as consistent with their service. They ran out of UNI that I had ordered so my waiter tried to sell me clams. I told him I wasn't interested and he responded:the clams are $5.00 as if he was bargaining with me and my food. When my check came, my waiter hovered over me as to see what I was going to leave him. The bill was $76.00 I left him$10.00. He then proceed to argue with me about his 15% mandatory tip. His manager came over and said it's not mandatory, but customary to tip 15% in N.Y. I was born and raised in N.Y. and on Mott Street. Maybe I can enlighten both manager and waiter. It is customary to tip nothin in NY if your service is not up to par.

Great Place run by Nice People

I am a native downtown New Yorker. I have eaten most everything everywhere. I write this at the risk of crowding one of my favorite places. Mottsu is one place that I return to with some regularity. The people are friendly, and the food is excellent. The sushi is among some of the best you will find and the Uni (Sea Urchin) is consistently great. They offer traditional Japanese dishes combined with some more Americanized favorites. The lunch menu is very fairly priced. Mott street has great character and this place is a real neighborhood GEM!

    Great Service

I was surprised and very pleased that the service in this restaurant was as personal and warm as it was. Despite the modest decor, it is an interesting venue with its window view of Mott Street's activities. The sushi was incredible, the vegetables fresh, and the prices were reasonable for the area. Highly recommended.

    Mediocre at best

Another typical Chinatown style Japanese restaurant in a neighborhood filled with overpriced and overrated restaurants. You can get better sushi from the Dukes or even Dean and Delluca around the neighborhood for half the price. This ain't no Japanese.
