    Not Going Back

I have been to this restaurant four or five times before. Each time was better than the last. I was looking forward to going there with my partner to celebrate our birthdays this past Friday night. The first letdown was the waitress. In the past, the wait staff was engaged and had great recommendations. She did not offer any suggestions until we asked. Even then, it sounded like she was forcing herself to give an opinion. The food was OK but not outstanding as it had been on previous visits. We were particularly disappointed with the lobster balls on the hot appetizer menu. The rest of the meal was just OK, certainly not at the level that we had come to expect. Here's the part that really soured us. My partner asked for a TASTE of one of the sake choices on the drink menu. You can usually get a small taste from any restaurant without a charge because they know that you are going to order something. Imagine our suprise when the bill came and there was a $2.00 charge for that SIP of sake! Our total bill (before tip) was $230 and they had the nerve to charge $2.00 for a freakin sip of sake?! We were mortified. For that reason and the fact that the quality of the experience is way downhill, we will not be back.

After Jean George eating here felt like a truck stop

I don't know if it was due to a busy saturday night or all the waiters had called in sick that day, but the fact remains that we did not get proper service for such an expensive joint. Our waitress seemed missing in action with food being brought to the table before the dirty dishes of the prior meal had been cleared, or waiting for an eternity for a birthday cake to be brought to the table (after being charged $7 @ person for the privilege) Or maybe the disappointing experience was due to the contrast of a dinner at Jean George the night before where we seemed to be attended by a staff of 25 people that glided about without being overbearing.

The Spicy King Crab is amazing

I dined here for restuaurant week but was so tempted by the a la carte choices strayed off the RW menu. I'm glad I did. The Spicy King Crab is the best crab dish I've had anywhere. Plump and sweet supefresh crab meat in a wondeful spicy sause. The sush too was divine, particulary the toro tartare. The service could not have been better. My server was helpful with recommendations, friendly and attentive. Its expensive, but well worth it for a special occasion or a pick-me-up treat.

    just okay..

We tried the omakase.. overall opinion is that the chef's talent is not adequately represented in his tasting menu. the food wasn't bad, just not at the level I'd expect given the cost and more importantly, masaharu-san's reputation. I think they need to reinvent the menu a bit. It appears more traditional japanese than I would expect from morimoto who is always testing the boundaries. You can get better pure japanese food in the city at places like Yasuda and Sakagura. the service is good in that they are attentive, however I was a little offended that they presumed we knew nothing about japanese food without checking first because we certainly did.

    Super Fresh Sushi

Visited Morimoto's Restaurant during Restaurant Week for lunch and I must say, both my friend and I were pleasantly surprised by the menu, decor and the service. The prices are not cheap, as expected. Even with the pre-fix lunch, we left $100 for two people, not including alcoholic beverages. However, I do think the money was well spent and this restaurant deserves good marks. The staff was extremely attentive, and not snobby like in so many NYC restaurants, and the sushi was super fresh and delicious. I would definitely recommend this place for a special occasion.

There's a reason why he's an iron chef

This place has the freshest ingredients! Good quality sashimi that you just know when you take the first bite. We also ordered a fish dish and a meat dish. It was cooked very well and tender with great accompaniments to pair the protein with. Overall great service, got a chance to meet Morimoto and that was just a perfect ending to a great meal!
