Went there at 8:00 p.m. Sushi bar was completely empty. Sat down. Three young sushi chefs stood there looking completely vacant. I waited and waited for one of three sushi chefs to look in my direction. Remember there were three of them and I was the only person at the sushi bar (they were also making sushi for the patrons at tables, but the restaurant was not very full). Nothing. Finally, I managed to place and order and got a single small piece of sushi (each order here is one piece, not two). It was average mediocre sushi - not as bad as supermarket sushi, not great. After eating my one piece of sushi, I sat and sat and waited for one of the chefs to take another order. Again, nothing. Finally, I snagged the attention of the chef closest to me (and it is a really small sushi bar) and managed to successfully order a second piece of sushi. I am still the only person at the sushi bar. After eating my second small piece of sushi, I waited and waited and finally got to order a third piece of sushi. But after that, it was all over. I was completely ignored. For about 10 minutes. Finally, I decided, "this is just too much trouble." I was still hungry, so I flagged a waiter and order tea and the green tea panna cota dessert (which was mediocre). I paid my bill and didn't leave and exited without leaving a tip - the first time I have done that in at least 15 years. If are looking for a loungy hip looking place to have a drink, you might like this place. But if you are at all discriminating about sushi and value competent service, I do not recommend this place.

...it is also delicious, and we are rather picky - eat sushi at all of the high end restaurants. Momoya is a great solid addition for the neighborhood and hopefully it will remain high quality.

My boyfriend and I were very curious about this new sushi restaurant in our neighborhood, and, as it turns out, for good reason. We were seated immediately, and the food was excellent. Starting off with a free appetizer of sardine tempura, we also tried the gyoza, lobster spring rolls (our favorite), and sweet beet salad (with incredible goat cheese). We then had the "tempura tasting," which did not dissapoint. By the time our sushi came, we were getting rather full, but the fresh spring special roll was the standout. The food was only surpassed by the service. The waiter was the best I've had in the city: attentive and quick to fix any errors in the kitchen. It was an amazing evening, and we will definitely be back soon.

My husband and I tried Momoya last night becuase our regular Chelsea Sushi was not as fresh as it used to be. We were really suprised at the hip and relaxed atmosphere and the food was really really good. All of the fish was extremely fresh and we actually ordered more as dinner went on. The staff was very friendly and effecient. My only advice is to make a reservation or go early. We sat at the bar and there was a line of people out the door waiting for a table. Really good for the neighborhood.
