Mitchell's Soul Food

My discovery of Mitchells Soul Food restaurant is bittersweet. Sweet because the food is delicious, bitter because my waistline will now suffer and expand from it. I ordered the fried chicken , mac and cheese, candied yams, potato salad, collard greens and ribs for a little dinner party and I was nervous cause I hadnt tasted any dishes before and heard about the restaurant on a blog. I only lived about 10 mins from the place for years but never noticed it in my travels.Needless to say, the food was delicious and did not disappoint. The fried chicken is the best. It was fresh and nice and hot as they fry it when you order it and not before. The mac and cheese, yams, potato salad , ribs, cornbread....man everything was ummm umm good. As they deliver made it even better but I was there the next day for round two of the chicken especially.Maybe it is a good thing I dont travel that road quite often cause I would really be in trouble.

I was very happy to find out that Mitchell's will deliver to 9th st. I ordered the fried fish with mac 'n' cheese and rice. The lady on the phone was pleasant, the delivery guy couldn't have been nicer AND this was REAL soul food. The fish was excellent, exactly what I wanted, the sides were also incredible. I also highly recommend the peach cobbler. All this food only cost me $9.50. Thats incredible. Horay for realistic prices finally! I was so happy that I gave the delivery guy a big tip. Someday I'll dine in the restaurant. I'm sure its as great as my delivery experience was. Check this place out, its realllllly good.

Mitchell's is just great. It's the most soul-food restaurant in the greater slope area. Sure, the fried chicken is good, but get the catfish, man! best thing about mitchell's though--every single side dish is done just right. I mean sure, they're over cooked, but they're over cooked in all the right seasoning. My personal favorite is the macaroni and cheese. It isn't always fresh, but when it is, it's the best macaroni and cheese in the area.

I've had better fried chicken. The Hong Kong iteration at Dragon Star in East Falls Church, VA, stands out. But Northern Virginia's a long way to go for dinner. The fried chicken is not overwhelmed by breading or the frying process. The flavor of the bird shines through. Peppery, especially when augmented with the best cheap hot sauce (Louisiana brand). I generally go with the decent collard greens and the above average yams. And I rarely do anything else. If not for the stern rebukes of my doctor, I'd still be there once a week.

don't let the cafeteria decor fool you, the fried chicken is phenomenal and you can't beat the price. very warm folks running this place despite the vague decor. the food was delish. they do takeout and everything was yummy and homemade.
