Worth the drive
I live in Harlem, sadly I have to drive way out to Brooklyn to get the most down home tasting food. Fried chicken is excellent. The prices are reasonable. Mitchell's is worth the drive over the bridge!

Excellent for the Soul
Superb soul food - extremely good sides. All the vegetables were better than in any of the BBQ places in Manhattan. The fried chicken was done perfectly - moist, tasty, with a great batter that was not too thick, not too salty.

The Food in Town
My daughter is in college in New York and I come from South Jersey to go shopping and enjoy the day with her. We normally go Amie Ruths in Harlem for lunch or dinner. I ask her to find another soul food resturant in New York. She went to Yelp a restuant review website and read the review and Mitchell receive excellent reviews. Well we visted the Mitchell and the food was excellent and on the money. I had the fish dinner and my daughter had the shrimp dinner. The fish and shrimp was fresh not frozen which make a big differnce. the cabbage, potatoes salad, collard greens tremdous. the only thing will did not like was the corn bread. the atmosphere was not in tip top condition but we didn't care . the food was excellent. If you been to amie ruth and sylvia try this resutrant you will not be disappointed. I have a found a new soul food resturant to come to every time i visit new york

Brooklyn's Southern Gem
Mitchell's is one of the best Southern restaurants in NYC. It really doesn't get much better than this. The atmosphere is very homey. The decor is less than appealing. However, the people there are sincerely nice and pleasant. I come in from Manhattan at least once a week just to take-out one of there amazing entrees. This is all that I ask for in life, a restaurant that acknowledges that you are there for good food, and gives it to you in a very big way at small prices.

This is the closest I get to home cook food.
As a person who grew up in southside VA, this place reminds me most of a good home cook meal. The restaurant doesn't look like much. I recommend take out and/or giving yourself plenty of time for delivery. But those shortcomings are very much made up for in the qaulity and the value of the food. Not a fan of the more well known soul food restaurants uptown and throughout the city, but this place is authentic and the real deal. If you want quick service, go to macdonalds. If you want atmosphere, go to Per Se. If you want really authentic southern cooking, this is the place.

Truest Fried Chicken in NYC
Mitchell's has been on Vanderbilt forever, well before the influx of white kids. Want to be served hand and foot, great atmosphere, all the crap we've come to expect? Go somewhere else. Want the best damn fried chicken on the East Coast? Come to Mitchell's.
