This is the closest I get to home cook food.
As a person who grew up in southside VA, this place reminds me most of a good home cook meal. The restaurant doesn't look like much. I recommend take out and/or giving yourself plenty of time for delivery. But those shortcomings are very much made up for in the qaulity and the value of the food. Not a fan of the more well known soul food restaurants uptown and throughout the city, but this place is authentic and the real deal. If you want quick service, go to macdonalds. If you want atmosphere, go to Per Se. If you want really authentic southern cooking, this is the place.

Truest Fried Chicken in NYC
Mitchell's has been on Vanderbilt forever, well before the influx of white kids. Want to be served hand and foot, great atmosphere, all the crap we've come to expect? Go somewhere else. Want the best damn fried chicken on the East Coast? Come to Mitchell's.

A-freakin-mazing!
This is a true diamond in the rough. All these fancy lil eateries all over this neighborhood, but nothing in this category can compete with Mitchell's. The most amazing fried chicken you will EVER have around here! Juicy short ribs that are so tender, you'd be hard pressed to find a bone (coz they've already fallen off in the pot!). Their service is spotty, and hours are kinda weird, but it's totally understandable considering that this is a small family run business. Totally excusable. and totally worth the wait! Always friendly and down to earth. These folks got it right! I am one of the unfortunates that have lives in the neighborhood for years and only recently discovered it. I hope they will be there to clog my arteries for years to come!

good food, spotty service.
The food here is great - If you can get it. The main problem is that they don't always deliver, and there's never any indication of when they do and don't. Also, they're frequently missing stuff. When you can get the food, do. It's great. The fried chicken is fantastic.

Mmmmmm, soul food . . .
Super delicious soul food in Prospect Heights, cheap and homey as it should be. The collard greens were tender, the mac and cheese slightly sweet, the cornbread earthy and rough-grained. Most importantly, three big filets of fried catfish, perfect with salt and hot sauce. Go. Now.

Umm Umm Good!
My discovery of Mitchells Soul Food restaurant is bittersweet. Sweet because the food is delicious, bitter because my waistline will now suffer and expand from it. I ordered the fried chicken , mac and cheese, candied yams, potato salad, collard greens and ribs for a little dinner party and I was nervous cause I hadnt tasted any dishes before and heard about the restaurant on a blog. I only lived about 10 mins from the place for years but never noticed it in my travels.Needless to say, the food was delicious and did not disappoint. The fried chicken is the best. It was fresh and nice and hot as they fry it when you order it and not before. The mac and cheese, yams, potato salad , ribs, cornbread....man everything was ummm umm good. As they deliver made it even better but I was there the next day for round two of the chicken especially.Maybe it is a good thing I dont travel that road quite often cause I would really be in trouble.
