Good food, average atmosphere, good services. Good value for the money

My husband and I are both from the South (Mississippi and Virginia) and we liked Miss Mamie's so much we had them cater our wedding! We are always disappointed with "southern" restaurants in New York, but not Miss Mamie's. It has given us the most authentic representation by far. Our favorite dishes are the Fried Catfish (the best in New York!) and the Smothered Chicken (out of this world!).

I patronized Spoonbread Too earlier this summer, and ordered fried chicken, which was delicious and flavorful, the collard greens, which were EXCEPTIONAL, and the mac and cheese which I've had better. The portions were huge. The price is great. One might not be able to finish the entire serving, because they give you so much. I also tried the sweet potato pie, which I got angry over because I only ordered 1 slice, it was just that good. I was served in no time, it was a take out order, and theres plenty of room to sit and enjoy your meal. Take the time out and go! You'll love it.

The bread pudding isn't great. If you have ever had Virgil's (near Times Square) bread pudding you will be greatly disappointed. Spoonbread uses meringue, whereas Virgil uses fresh whipped cream. Spoonbread uses mushy cake in the pudding, whereas Virgil uses crunchy vanilla wafers. Virgil's pudding base is also better. No contest.

I ended up ordering fried chicken, spinach and macaroni and cheese, with banana pudding for dessert. Delivery is very prompt and efficient. The fried chicken was tender and flavorful. Very good. The spinach was heartily seasoned with white pepper. I really don't like white pepper at all. If you like white pepper, I guess you'll like the spinach. The macaroni and cheese was good. It was more like a casserole, or a noodle pudding. Overall, the quality of their food is very good. Very home-y and comforting. What I would say, though, although I did enjoy my meal, I kept thinking that I would have been just as satisfied - if not MORE satisfied - with KFC. Honest. And KFC would cost around half as much. I guess I would suggest that yes, SpoonBread is definitely worth ordering from, but don't do the fried chicken. I am still full from dinner, so I haven't eaten my banana pudding yet. I'll post a review after I've eaten it.

The ribs fall off the bone here, and the portions are humongous. Try the sweet potatoes...they melt in your mouth. And the collard greens actually taste good, too. We've also had the chicken and it's like no other place. All the food is cooked to order and just like down South! Even better.
