    Greasy spoon

I agree with the previous review, manage your expectations. And by manage I mean lower them. I don't buy into the hype of Mike's, yes it's cheap and yes it's fast and yes the portions are decent but that doesn't convey quality. I've spent my whole life in brooklyn and I know diners. This place falls short on a few key points 1) home fries are not made daily and need a ton of salt & pepper to taste 2) oj is out of a can, if you're a breakfast place fresh squeezed is a must! 3) the eggs are of the lowest grade, they have no taste whatsoever. 4) bacon is all fat and no meat I used to love this place but things change, rent, cost of living, etc. don't skimp on what made mike's Mike's Raise the quality and people will pay.

    Best Diner in the Area

Dollar for dollar, this is the BEST diner in Clinton Hill/ Ft Greene. It's come to my attention that they've had some reputation issues as of late, and I personally would like to put it to rest; I've eaten their food for 5+ years and haven't had a complaint yet. It's a diner, the service is excellent, the prices are the cheapest in the area by far... there's not much more to say. If you leave Mike's disappointed, then you should probably reflect on what expectations you had going into it, as it's all pretty straight-forward and transparent. Furthermore, they've were excellent and caring neighbors. If you live in this area, you know that they are a friend of everyone in the community. All in all, what I'd like to emphasize most is manage your expectations. Mike's is a great place to feed a huge family while on a budget; it's a great place if you're a student or starving artist; not so much of a great place if you want to take your girl out for a romantic meal; not so great of a place if you're looking for gourmet. But as far as diners go, this place rocks, and ironically, I've seen much worse restaurants with higher ratings... which for me completely undermines NY State's entire rating system, but that's a whole different story....

The Real Deal - It Is What It Is

I like Mike's. I just moved from Manhattan and I'm used to over priced, tres chic everything so I really LOVE finding a place that isn't neither of these things. Mike's Coffee shop is very old-timey to me. The guys running the place are pretty old and I like old people! They don't mess around, give them your order (I usually call in to pick up), pay the guys and say thank you. The food a a great value, I love a less than $5 BLT or Grill Cheese. Today I had the Pastrami sandwhich, came true with the perfect mustard on Rye bread. This place is no fuss - so don't go if you're feeling fussy. Go here if u want simple NY style diner food.

    Old School Wonder

The only reason to wait at Mike's is to step back into the New York that raised our parents and wouldn't let them leave. Before yuppies, gentrification, $12 eggs and the loss of soul in New York's best neighborhoods there was Mike's, a well-lit, unassuming space with great diner food, a loyal staff who cares and diners willing to wait on weekends rather than even think about walking across the street to the diner where this simple formula can't seem to happen. I don't understand the hater reviews here, but I'm glad they won't be in line. And the best thing about this true old school diner is that for all the changes in the neighborhood, it may be the last place where everybody from black church folk to hipsters to parents and kids of every shade to art students to the rest of us are represented booth by booth, chowin' down on good eats at good prices. It takes a village.

    Not recommended

Don't be fooled. Why anyone would love this place is absurd..I met the babe with tattoos there in the 60's? Poor service long waits on weekends. Yeah, that's what I want.

    this is the real diner

If you're looking to eat a fast, tasty, well-buttered meal, Mike's is the place. Plus you might see Jay-Z there!

    Well worth the wait

Yes, the line can be crzy. Yes, it's only eggs, and bacon. The grits and cheese are right though. The reality is there are other coffee/breakfast spots in close proximity to this place like Pratt diner. But, none of them could match the atmosphere, service, and food that Mike's serves. The food is great. Sit at the counter if you are really hungry. You might not get two seats together but it is the fastest service possible. Norberto, Luis and the rest of the staff really take care of you. I've been going for over a decade. They know you're order, make the eggs just the way you like, and will take care of you like family. So yeah, there are other restaurants to get a meal quicker, but none match the experience as Mike's. That's why people wait in the rain for "regular breakfast food". Sometimes it's more than the food. Something about sitting in there has an energy all its own. Not to mention the pretty people who come in for a bite. Do yourself a favor and settle for nothing less. Mike's will never dissapoint.
