Good food, bad service
The host is not friendly or welcoming. The experience is probably better if you are part of the "club" that gets preferential seating and treatment. Good food that's not worth it because of the cold service.

Amazing food
Best italian food in town. The service is great and even though the line is long, its worth the wait! Best iced tea i've had in my life and although the place is a bit cramped, it's what makes Mezzaluna so special. I recommend this to every single one of you.

Reliable but tight
If you don't care about squeezing in to get a table and being crowded the food is consistently good and the service very good as well. The buffalo mozzerella appetizer is great as are the pastas and the specials always fresh and excellent. Best to sit at the car with a glass of wine and get and app or a pizza...not a great place to bring kids either but I find myself there quite often especially during lunch.

my favorite restaurant
mezzaluna if my absolute favorite restaurant in nyc. i eat here about 4 times a week. all the food is fresh and the staff is super friendly. yes, it is true that it is small and often feels cramped, but this is just the best place. as for the food... first off, the iced tea is a must. best iced tea in the city. the pollanca salad is my favorite salad, although the tropicale is pretty good too. the calamari appetizer is also delicious. the pasta is also great. i would recommend the black linguini with shrimp, it is a little spicy sometimes and is spectacular. the penne alla vizanzio is also great and so is the linguini with clams. the thin crust pizza is also superb. make sure to ask for the spicy olive oil to use with the pizza. it is a great touch.

Good espresso
A friend and I had lunch at Mezzaluna -- a small, intimate restaurant that has been around for several years now. The food is quite wonderful, but the place is noisy and the wait staff has an attitude (at least our waiter did). I had the grilled calamari as my entrée - tender and tasty, served with baby arugula and shaved fennels. Very nice. My friend had lasagna bolongnese. She loved it. We shared a panna cotta, presented with freshly prepared blueberry sauce. Not too sweet and smoothly textured. But the real winner here is the espresso -- full-bodied, intense, not bitter and with a thick crema. Incidentally, the olive oil they bring to dunk the bread in is not good. The prices are reasonable for Upper East Side.

Cramped atmosphere, poorest UES Pizza yet
Went here with my fiancee over the weekend for lunch. The place was packed and we were seated right next to another couple with our tables separated by an inch. I felt like we were double dating with them. It was so generally loud in the restaurant that we could not have a conversation without yelling. The soup (squash) was bland and worse than Eli's refrigerated market soup. We had the Margarita Pizza and it was mediocre at best. While the thin crust is good (but no better than Al Forno's or Patsy's), the toppings were sloppy and sloughed off the moment it was served. The pie was very small as well- smaller than a medium size at any other restaurant. The pizza also tasted very smoked as though it was cooked with pepperoni (which we did not order), which overpowered any other ingredient. And the price is utterly ridiculous- I payed over $50 for two soups and one medium pie with NO alcoholic drinks. Will not go back again, as there are much better UES pizza for far cheaper. This was the worst UES pizza I've had to-date. On the bright side, at least the waiters weren't as bad as previous reviewers had mentioned.
