I was expecting to be disappointed - and it went beyond.
Last night I met a friend at mezcals Bay Ridge knowing the food is frowned upon. (food was fine, we all know good Mexican food is a challenge in NY). There was a mariachi guy playing loudly and demanding attention as he bent down in my face three times. I expected no eye contact first time would curb him, hand wave second time. No can do. My friend was drinking soda, they pushed the refill then charged 2.50 each. I arrived for a drink and the waiter asked to take my order five times, twice would suffice. Its too bad they don't seem to know that at 7pm Friday night one doesn't want a mariachi man leaning in your face. I don't think I invited him into my face.

Mediocre would be a compliment. Even the chips and salsa taste a bit off.

Tasteless Tacos
I went to Mezcals last night because I was in the mood for tacos and have been living 3 blocks away for 2 years and was a bit curious about whether it was any good. I have been to Marias (thought it was good until they hired an incompetent waiter that I always got stuck with), Lobo (margaritas are good, food is poor), and Los Pollitos II. Anyway. Mezcals has good chips & salsa. That is it. My "guest" and I shared one order of soft tacos and one order of regular tacos (mixed combo of chicken and beef). They poured a sauce all over the soft tacos, the shredded chicken was covered in something, yet was tasteless, and the beef was runny. They served it with a side of bland rice and unimpressive refried beans (the only saving grace was the melted cheese on top!) I don't know what "real" mexican food tastes like, but I hope it's not that.

One try was too many...
I found the food to have no taste at all and I don't like my food very spicy but it was even bland to me. The guacamole was so so. The wait staff was nice and accommodating but overall I was unimpressed and definitely not returning.

Mediocre, At Best
As a native of Southern California, I find the food at Mezcal's to be mediocre at best. It is greasy and bland. Plus, I didn't feel very good after eating there. For such unimpressive food, it is fairly overpriced. I wouldn't go back.

For what it is it's the best around here
I eat here regularly, and have for many many years. Great people. especially once you get to know them. The food is straight forward Mexican at its best. Very similiar to what you would find in Mexico or So Cal (if you go local, that is). And that goes for the service too. So if you're looking to "dine," try the place on Union that offers "fresh guacamole" when you sit down, tries to impress you by making it at your table, then charges $12 for an avacado. If you want good food at a great value, eat here.

No Mas
I decided to take my little self out to lunch, and, craving mexican, decided to try this place out. MIStake. The food was blah, and the service while at first congenial, ended up lousy. I adored a diet soda that once I finished, they refilled without question. When I got my bill, I saw they had charged me for two sodas at $2 each. They refused to take it off, so I refused a tip. Oops!
