A let-down
Although charming and a great ambience, the service was poor. We were told we had to order more b/c there was a wait (we ordered 2 appetizers, 1 entre, and a bottle of wine!). Additionally, the portions were small and disappointing.

Wow
I ate at mexicana mama this weekend for the first time. The Halibut special was outstanding! It was topped with goat cheese and some other mexican goodies. The salsa was to die for. I could not stop eating my friend's chicken mole dish either. The service was great, fair prices, and huge portions. The service was great and the waiter was cute. I will definitely be going back. Thanks Mama!

Me Encanta Mexicana Mama
This is one of our fav. restaurants in the city. The salsas are unbelievable, as are the burritos & enchiladas. Totally unlike tex-mex (which I don't really care for). I would stay away from the specials which can overpriced & small, & stick with the basic menu.

Awesome Mexican
This is one of my favorite places in NYC for dinner. I love the food, the salsa is amazing, fish dishes are even better and the community atmosphere. I often travel from the upper east side just to eat at mexicana mama. Despite the long waits and cramped quarters, I will eat here as often as possible.

Just okay
We had high expectations of this place based on the reviews, and eagerly checked it out as soon as we moved to the neighborhood. VERY disappointing--the portions were very small and we left still hungry, plus, not one of the dishes we tried had the special, alluring flavors you expect from Mexican-Mexican food (smoked tomato, tangy, smoky chiles, salty cheese, sweet-savory corn.) Instead, there were small dishes with high prices and relatively un-intense flavors. With Mi Cocina and Kitchen Market around, not to mention Cowgirl next door, we won't be coming back.

Wirth the wait
YUM. The burritos & tacos are amazing. The salsas & mole are so flavorful and memorable. The specials always satisfy and the waitstaff actually know what they are talking about. I have yet to find anything as good in Manhattan.
