In response to CGL
I am afraid I MUST come to the defense of the reviewer below who criticized the potatoes in a burrito. The reviewer just below me said "um, RICE is in 99% of burritos!" But hello! We know that. The comment that the reviewer below responded to was about having POTATOES in the burrito. No RICE! And ya know what? I agree with the complaint that potatoes have no real purpose in a proper burrito. CGL, get it together before you lash out! And Mama, everyone knows that no one gets by completely on looks. You better work it out!

Who puts rice in a burrito?
@batfutt: isn't rice a "tasteless dry starch" that you find in 99% of the burritos on the planet? ...so yeah, if you are in the mood for a Chipolte lard-bomb of a burrito, don't go to Mexicana-Mama. If, OTOH, you want some of the best salsa's in the city, a wicked piece of coconut crusted halibut, or a delicious chicken or beef burrito - with sweet and regular potato chucks, then go to Mexican Mama. ...and no, I don't work there, but I live in the 'hood, and I'm in shock that anyone would even think to compare Mexicana Mama and Chipoltle...

BEST ENCHILADA SUIZAS
I love this place.I have lived in the hood for 10 years and this is one of my favs. The area has changed in a bad way.The mom and pop stores are disappearing. We need to support the locals. Mexicana Mama is a great neighborhood joint.I hope it is not replaced by a corporation.

Skip it
Small place, but filled quickly after we arrived. Guacamole and service were great, but that's about it. The blood orange margarita was small and overpriced, and the enchiladas rojas were boring (ask for extra mole sauce if you want some flavor). The beef burrito wasn't too flavorful, and like another reviewer wrote, who puts potatoes in a burrito?! I'd skip this place. You can find much better Mexican food in NYC.

Yum. So Yum! Amazing!
Sca-rump-tious! I absolutely love the authentic food at Mexicana Mama. Some might complain about portion sizes. I say you like portions too big if so. The space is adorable, the service down to earth and friendly, and the food is muy authentico. Get the home made salsas and see if you can resist. I brought someone here who complained that it was "not real mexican". Whatever!! Relax, get a Marg, and embrace. Fabulous! Only wish they allowed dogs so I could bring my toy poodle in with me - she loves Mexican food and people! By the way, is the "half of everything" review below based on a Carly Simon lyric??

Mediocre and overpriced
Who puts potatoes in a burrito? Why jam hunks of relatively tasteless starch into a dish that should be full of flavor? Good questions. Even with the wasted calories of the potatoes, the burrito is on the small side, especially for the $12 price. Another question: Why slice a burrito into five pieces and lay them flat on the plate? It was dry to begin with (thanks again to the potatoes), but this only made it more so. Chipotle has a better, bigger burrito at about half the price with ingredients of no less quality. This place is solidly mediocre and slightly overpriced, but there continues to be a market for sterile Mexican food in the city. Apparently, a restaurant can get by with a cute name that attracts locals who can tie up their yapping little dogs in sweaters right outside on the sidewalk before going home to write reviews full of words like "yummy" and "amazing".

I have no need for half of anything...
No half baked food, no have a waitress' attention. Give me all the flavor I need, and at the same time, add a new dimension. Half of nothing is no good, give all to me. And Mexicana Mama does. I had a sampling of salsa (the daily special, cruda, and a smoky chipotle) and they were delicious. I also had Enchiladas in a Mole sauce and a few Margs. The food was excellent but the Margs were very, very weak. And I can stand it - I am strong that way. I wand to say Ole when the food arrived. It's a tiny but cute space, so be prepared to wait. Recommended.
