It's back!
After being shuttered for a while it was open when I went back a few days ago. It seems to have a new name -- Meske Ethiopian Restaurant on a new business card and a new phone number: 212.399.1949. New owners? I got two vegtable lunch special combinations to go. The taste was much better than recent years and the portions were quite ample. New chef? Will be going back soon try some other the other dishes I uses to get.

Portions back to normal?
[After posting a review last year saying that midtown Meskerem's portions got smaller, I wanted to give an update.] I went back recently for the lunch special and was pleasantly surprised to see that the portions were back to normal.

New Favorite Place
I have been to Meskerem twice now... the first time with a friend who wanted to introduce me to Ethopian and the second to introduce the food to someone else. Both times we had good service and great food. I don't know what people are saying about portion size because both times we couldn't finish our food because there was so much. Fantastic flavors and friendly staff. I can't wait to go back again. It's truly one of my new favortie places because the food is so good. The atmosphere isn't much, but who cares when the food is delicious.

very poor service
We were 4 adults and a kid visiting this restaurant for first time. We thought we would order 1 appetizer, 2 entrees and then order more depending on if we like the food. We were told, we were occupying space and if we do not order minimum 5 entrees we cannot eat there. In other words we were asked to leave. We were so upset, we just left and went to another restaurant next door - "Queen of Sheba". No such rule there, ended up liking the food there and ordering worth $50. Meskerem lost to us because of there incredibly poor customer service, very rude attitude and this rule for minimum ordering. I am never going there ever again and would not recomment it to anyone.

Good food, small portions
This is my new go to Ethiopian place because it's in Midtown and has delicious combos. The portions are moderately priced, but they are small, so we have to order two combos and add a side; for the price I wish I could get more. It's just so good.

Finally, not disappointed by Ethiopian food in NYC!
I had tried just about every Ethiopian restaurant in NYC (both Awashes, Zooma, Meskel - still wanting to try Massawa) and had just about given up on finding a restaurant that compared to my favorite places in London and California. While this still does not quite compare, I have to say I was fully satisfied with the food and service. The portions were quite sufficient (compared to Meskel, where the portion sizes were a joke) - ordered veggie combo and chicken tibs for two people and we were stuffed. The flavors were MUCH better than at Zoma, and the service far superior than Awash or Q.O.S. Only complaint was that the injera seemed a bit off, but the deliciousness of the dishes made up for that. They were also out of honey wine, but when they saw our disappointment, gave us two glasses of riesling instead, on the house! All of that said, I hope my experience was not a one off (or that after over a year of searching for good Ethiopian in the city I have seriously lowered my standards). I will have to go back again to confirm the excellence of Meskerem!

Go for their lunch special!
I always frequent Meskerem (out of 5 places I've tried, it's got the best Ethiopian food). I've had 1 subpar experience, but all the other times it's been great with fantastic food. If only the prices were lower, or their portions were bigger, I'd be eating here A LOT more! And if they had lunch specials on the weekends, holy smokes, I'd be eating all my lunches there. The special lunch menu is a must. The price is almost 1/2 as dinner menu with the same sized portions! I was surprised (thought they'd be a lot smaller). Go for lunch to try it out :)
