    Best mexican ever

I stumbled upon this restaurant while on my way to another and decided to give it a try after the host convinced me it was the best mexican food in New York. I have to agree. My favorite dish is the queso w/ mushrooms. The shrimp tacos are great too and I highly suggest the strawberry margarita. I also have to add that you should ask for Michael as your server he is not only very friendly and attentive but damn good looking! :) Try it out you won't regret it.

    Diamond in the Rough

I took my girlfriend there a couple of weeks ago and we fell in love with the restaurant. The place was hopping and we had such an incredible meal. Everyone says the portions are small, but the server basically tells you how to order. We had a guac tasting, ceviche tasting (Pulpo is unbelievible), two plates of tacos and baked oysters. It was perfect. It's big on taste, if not so big on portions. We love places that flow well. As soon as you finished one dish, they would bring another. We left, after the pumpkin flan, and went out all night. After mexican! I had never had mexican like this before. We will be back. Especially for the shrimp tacos.

    Going against the grain

Not sure when some of the other reviews were written concerning the food portions but I did not find this to be the issue. My friend and I ordered the taster's guac and an appetizer plus 2 more entrees (waiter recommended 3 plates total after the guac as did other reviews I read prior to going to this restaurant). By the time the last 2 plates came, we were only able to eat 1/8 of one and half of the other. The food was pretty good and I would have loved to eat it all but I was way too full. I think we would have been fine with just 2 total plates. So I think the best bet is to order 2 dishes after the guac and decide from there if you need more food. As for everything else, food was good - you gotta love the tapa style. Service was mediocre... we waited a very long time to get the bill. And ambiance - well it's the east village.

Good atmosphere - not worth the nost

Oh my. Having been at most of NYC's upscale Mexican spots, this was interesting, but the tiny portions were worth half of what they cost, at best. Good for drinks, but was not good in terms of the quality/quantity for what you get. A disappiointment.

    Good food

My husband and I had a great meal at mercadito. While the portions were small we were very full by the end. We ordered 5 dishes (at about $10) each and could have easily been full on 4 dishes. The bill was about $75 including tip which we did not think was bad for a great meal in NYC. It is hard to go out for less than that. The service was good as well. The chicken picadas were are favorite, tuna ceviche and tacos were good as well

Mexico City tacos at sky high NYC prices

We found this restaurant place strolling around the East Village; we thought we had found a new gem. In all fairness, the food was actually great and the service prompt. Unfortunately, you'd have to be on a model diet to be full after eating here. Also, every time you are about to finish you precious guacamole, margarita (basically a shot after you take out the ice), etc a waiter swoops in and tries to steal your plate. At these prices you'll be scraping the guacamole bowl! Nice try, but I don't think I'll be back.

    Fantastic food, miniscule portions

Yes, it's delicious, and I'm fine spending a fortune on good food of any type, but this isn't the neighborhood mexican it professes to be; maya, rosa mexicano, pampano, etc. are actually cheaper if you take into account how much food you get for the money. The guacamole and botana tastings are especially small. Margs are great but the ol' lots-of-ice-in-small-glass trick. Check the menu and imagine tiny 'tapas'-style servings to figure what it'll cost (e.g. you'll need three orders of the side-less bite-size tacos to concoct an 'entree'). It's a shame, though no one seems to care (it's always packed).
