    Very Happy Hour

First off, this Mercadito is far more inviting/satisfying and in its own way more comfortable (despite the cramped quarters) than the more spacious but personality-less outpost over on Grove St.I must admit that I usually ony come her for happy hour when all their margarita, even the $12 especial, are a fin. And these are great margaritas! The guacamole is very good as is the ceviche sampler. I read the fish tacos are great, but have yet to have them. I usually head over to Nolia for dinner.

    Beware of Reviews

I'd be skeptical of all these glowing reviews, after having just eaten here I can say conclusively this place is no La Palapa. Not necessarily a short coming of the food, this place just isn't in the same league. It's small, informal and outrageously overpriced. Tapas sized portions, which were good enough. However, they believe in the whole "small portions on wierd, big plates" thing, which works if it's inventive or a cut above. This is just plain mexican food, that will run you about $100 for four people having lunch (no drinks). Don't get suckered by the reviews and keep to places that give you the experience for this price, rather than just the bill.

    great tacos

I am a frequent visitor in mexico and i love and crave mexican food all the time. when i stumbled upon Mercadito i was thrilled when i walked inside to find an incredibly warm and welcoming staff. although it is VERY crowded on the weekends, it is totally worth it once you are escorted to your table by the hostess. i ordered the mojarra tacos (tilapia) and the pulpo (octopus) cerviche. amazing amazing amazing! i could eat that food everyday!! the dishes seemed perfect in every way. the drinks were made with fresh fruit instead of a premade sour mix. fresh strawberries and limes made up my strawberry margarita. i highly recommend Mercadito.

    Not worth it

The tequila bar, cozy dining area with dim lighting and rustic wooden tables all lead one to believe they have made the right choice upon walking into Mercadito. Then the food comes. The servings are so incredibly small for the price, it would be laughable if it wasn't plain offensive. The 4 tacos for $13.50 were literally bite size, and while they were good, they were definitely not amazing. Another way over-hyped, overpriced New York restaurant. I don't enjoy being hurried through a meal or paying 30-something dollars for average food that has done little more than make me REALLY hungry.. for something better and cheaper!

    Good stuff

Great Mexican food, very creative, yet authentic. The guac is awesome, definitely go for the 3 variety tasting! The waitress could have been more attentive and the entrees did not come out at the same time, but the food tasted great. Maybe you'd be better off going on a weeknight instead of a weekend when it's less crowded.

    Great inventive mexican

Valentine's Day tasting menu was great, and the super friendly staff even changed some items due to my shellfish allergy. Very surprisingly good. Still, the space is a little crowded.

Best mexican in the east village

Quite possibly my new favorite spot for eclectic mexican- beats la palapa by a landslide for ambiance, food diversity, and value. Try the cactus and mushroom toastados, with a mango guacamole starter to get you going...although they dont have "sangria" on the menu, their wine/fruit drink is also outstanding...
