    Average food

We really wanted to like this place because we live nearby. The back room is sweet and the service is nice, but sadly the food is average at best. We started with the traditional guacamole which was way over salted and needed more acid and more seasoning. Even the juice from the limes wedges that came with our beers was not enough to redeem it. Too salty is just too salty! Then we shared the mariscos salad. They should tell you that this seafood salad is served warm it's ok, but there was way too much dressing, drowning the greens and wilted mesclun greens are a bit weird. The taste was ok, but the shrimp and scallops are tiny. I had a Berkshire pork taco special which was too dry and under seasoned while my boyfriend had the chili rellenos which was the same seafood from the salad smothered in cheese and crema. He said it was average at best. I did, however, love the Refresco De Fruta which I had in mango. If only it were worth going back for that alone...

    go back to the southwest!

i love this restaurant! i love my neighborhood. The one bad thing “people like Graciegirl on 04/18/2008"....Rudely sitting at a table talking about what cool New Yorkers they're becoming...If you must invade our neighborhood ...please keep up .Here's free lesson in NY commonsense ... New Yorkers know that when they walk into a small NYC restaurant that it's an eat it and beat it kind of place. If you want a large place where you can BS all night I suggest a short bus ride into New Jersey...Chi Chi's won't rush you!

    not a great experience

I visited this restaurant on a Thursday evening (6:30ish.) It was empty when my friend and I arrived. We stood outside contemplating the menu. An odd and rude manage (owner???) came up and said, yeah it's Mexican food in a very snotty voice. I'm like, OK jerk, I know Mexican food ,in fact I'm from the southwest and my boyfriend is Mexican so I don't need your tutorial. That should've been our cue to go somewhere else. Sadly, we did anyway. The food was ok. I had the papidos al pastor. They were so-so, but heavy. The al pastor is obviously not grilled on a spit, but it was an ok faux version. After we ate dinner (at a normal pace) the waiter asked us if we'd like dessert and we said no, but we would like another drink (we still had guacamole left.) About 2 minutes after our beers arrived the manager gave us our bill and a minute later tried to take it back -we hadn't put money in it yet-because we had just gotten our drinks. The guy was very huffy and said fine, but we have people waiting. It was SO RUDE. I will never go back to this place and I will tell everyone I know to avoid it like the plague. Five more minutes of my meal (to finish) would've ensured at least a second chance for this place, but they're obviously more interested in turnover than providing a nice dinner for patrons.

    a big step down

it had been awhile since we'd been to mercadito - from the moment we walked in, it was not looking good. the restaurant smelled funky, and we were informed the kitchen wouldnt be open until 5pm (20 minutes...) we ordered drinks that didnt come for at least that long and in the interim, a waiter spilled a glass of water all over me and we were jostled by the tight quarters. we used to LOVE this place, but the tacos were changed, and not foe the better. the guacamole was good, altho not a garlicky as we remembered. the queso fundido and the drinks were the best things we had - but hardly a tribute to the chef we once revered as AMAZING. altho the waiter graciously took 2 drinks and a plate of tacos off the bill, it was only after bringing us the WRONG tacos and making us wait for 50+ minutes. altogether, a huge disappointment from what was once a favorite restaurant.

    Really good food, small space

I probably would review the place better had i visited in the summer because they have a great outdoor area. We sat inside and they crammed all the tables together. We were also by the door, so people who were waiting hovered over our table waiting for us to leave. The food was great, but expect to spend 30 - 40 per person. I reccommend the chicken platter. The tacos only come with 4 mini tacos. It is also a traditional mexican restaurant, so the tortillas are corn and everything is made fresh on the spot. I would not reccomend the sangria, waste of $8. The bar is tequila only.

The menu offers up share style [select]ions that allow you to truly enjoy each course with friends. From the guacamole and then cerviche samplers to the fish and then shrimp tacos our group was delighted! Good service, well balanced sangria, great tequila cocktails, and cute back room, and fresh flavors made for great outting!
