Great Flavors if you're not really hungry

just got delivery, was sooooo disappointed with the portions of the tacos. Are you kidding? Is that the smallest taco ever? Are they going for some kind of world record to see how small a taco can be. Flavors were great, from pork to fish, rice and beans. But after dropping $50 on food and have to fill up on chips to satisfy our hunger, Mercadito Cantina has left a bad taste in my mouth.

    Best Mexican around, but...

Lived in the EV a long time, this is far and away the best Mexican in the area. A little bit of upscale Mexican meets trendy EV hotspot. In particular I would recommend the Taquiza's, which are a great deal (the double delivery deal for around $30 is a LOT of food). The pork is the best thing on the menu (duh), and is awesome. Now for the caveat... delivery is poor, during all but the slowest periods. Don't get me wrong, the food is good, but I have yet to get a delivery that was "correct". For example, tonight I ordered a double taquiza and a fish taco. I got both main orders, but got extra salsa (basically the salsa platter, which I didn't order), but got no chips (which is supposed to come with it). Lots of salsa, not much to do with them. Not entirely "bad" (it evened out), just annoying. That said, the folks there are really nice... when I've called in the past they've credited me for any mistakes, and haven't made any issue about it. So, great place, definitely recommend it, you're rolling the dice on delivery. Oh, and it took 1.5 hrs tonight... given, Saturday at a popular spot, but that is a LONG time, longer even than Caracas.

    Not too thrilled by dessert

The services was excellent. The atmosphere was nice. They had a nice room in the back but it was a bit stuffy. The set up is by the entry to the kitchen so there were a lot of employees hanging out. The food was great. The guacomole was good as well. However, when we ordered dessert we were very dissapointed. We ordered Thres Leche Cake and it tasted as if the cake was store bought and very very soggy. I do not recommend the dessert but the place over all was great.

Below Average Food for an Above Averaged Price

I was really excited to go to this restaurant because it was top rated Mexican food in the East Village. I got there and it looked quite swanky. I was excited by the design of the restaurant. However when I just walked three block I was not excited about how uncomfortable the seats were, they had no back, were extra tall (I'm short), and difficult to move off of. However, I was still excited because it was top rated mexican food restaurant near me. I order the pescado and shrimp tacos. They were overly fried. I think they may have fried them so much to cover up the below average fish. The sauce they was goopy. Then I had the gaucomole, which wasn't bad but the portion could have fed my anorexic model friend better than me. Then me and my friend had this thing called ropas/rojas the sauce was so goopy. I do not understand why this restaurant had to make every sauce so goopy, what were they trying to cover up? The service was great, I felt bad I had to tell her our food was so disappointing. She was very understanding though. This place is no La Esquina, but if you happen to like fried, goopy food, and small portions go here you'll love it.

    Great place

I love the food here period. Top notch. One question to the reviewer who wrote ' The food here is ABOVE AVERAGE but not that good.' What exactly does that sentence mean!?

    So so good!

Yes, the tacos are small, but you do get three and they're so delicious! My boyfriend and I passed by and were in the mood for Mexican food, and we're already wondering when we can go back. We got two types of salsa (one warm, one cold), both were fantastic. The chips are thick but not oily and really tasty. We got both steak and chicken tacos. The steak tacos were simple but authentic, served with just lime juice. The steak was SO juicy. The chicken was served with corn and pico de gallo, also tasty. The tortillas were good but tended to break and get soggy if you didn't gobble down the tacos right away (but really, you WILL gobble them down right away). The corn on the cob side dish was almost TOO flavorful, powerful but delicious. The flan was thick and heavy but not too much so. We also ordered a margarita, which was initially too sweet, but we squeezed the lime it came with and after that it was perfect. That plus two beers came out to be about 60 bucks. We're from California and love love love Mexican food, this is the high-end version, not the greasy, down and dirty type we also love. That might help the critics expecting something else. We definitely recommend!

    Great service, small portions

Three of us went to the cantina last night and whilst the service was great (the bartender offered us free chips and salsa because the one order of tacos was only slightly delayed) the portions were really small. The food was very good but if they increased the bite size tacos to at least 3 per serving (from 2) then this place would be awesome.
