Italian hot chocolate is the best. Dinner and dessert is only so-so, save it for somewhere else

The first time I found out about this place, I went three times in one month! The food is delicous and good heaping portion for the price. Of course the desserts hit the sweet spot, but the food was fabulous too (great brunch menu and lots of stuff for vegetarians like me). The restaurant is not designed for ambiance, but who cares when the food is that yummy! The service is slow, and the wait is average time for an NYC restaurant. I really recommend this place but my only advice is: don't go here for first/blind dates since its very noisy...its not intimate.

Went on a weekend, with a group of four for brunch. We were told there was a 30 minute wait, and ended up waiting only 15 minutes. But, we sat down, and a surly gentlemen - apparently our waiter - greeted us with "Do you know what you want?" after 20 minutes of sitting and staring at each other. No "Hi", no "good afternoon", no "welcome", no apology for his absence, just a blunt question as if he could care less about our experience there. We ordered our food. 20 minutes later, our water & coffee appears by a man different than our waiter. 35 minutes after that, our brunch finally appears, by a man different than our waiter. As the sole point of going there was to get dessert, we waited for another 30 minutes AFTER we finished our meal. The busboy had cleared off our dishes by this point. I was frustrated where I glared at three waiters who passed by, until one stopped and asked if there was a problem. I explained to him that we had been sitting for an inordinately long period of time, and we wanted to order dessert. The gentleman took our order. 30 minutes later, our dessert arrived - with an incorrect order. My friend explained to the waiter that she was allergic to the wrong order, and would not eat it. 30 minutes after that, we finally received the correct order. It took an additional 20 minutes to receive our check. I asked to speak to a manager on my way out of the restaurant, and after standing around for 20 minutes, I left. The food is overpriced, and not at all spectular. Quite frankly, equivalent desserts can be found at many of the chocolate shops and bakeries throughout the city, at comparable prices and with much less frustration. The restaurant remains a cheap gimmick, prying on NYU undergrads with daddy's credit card, tourists venturing "downtown", and unsuspecting movie goers. Avoid, unless you want to spend 4 hours being frustrated during your meal because of woefully incompetent service. And note: despite our complaints about the service after the fact, we have received nothing from the management, not even an apology.

Aside from the expected wait on a weekend evening and the horrendous wait, by the time our party was seated, the server was highly unprofessional and the food was highly disappointing. After asking he give us one more minute to decide, he took 10 minutes to return for our order. We finally got the food, and the strawberries were mushy and the bananas were brown. We asked for new fruit, and someone delivered it to the next table. We tried flagging down the waiter to no avail. He finally came over, and I asked for more water for the third time. He handed us the check with the 20% tip circled and a "thank you!". There was no way he was getting 20%. He then failed to come back and pick up the money for 10 minutes. The busboy was so eager to seat a new party that he started clearing the dishes off the table and placing them in his plastic tub while we were all sitting there. He also blocked me in the corner until he had finished. We got the hint and left. Poor service, so-so food.

I have been to Max Brenner 4 times and have never been disappointed. The service I received has never been exceptional, but never awful either. The chocolate fondue is AMAZING and the portions of it are almost too much for two people to handle. It's a little pricey, but totally worth it. The hot chocolate here is great too, I've never been to City Bakery, which I've heard makes this place seem like Swiss Miss, but I'm a hot chocolate buff and I can't get enough of it. The white hot chocolate is delicious as well, but nothing compares to Max Brenner milk chocolate. To die for.

Just got back from an anticipated visit - the service is very poor. It took a while for our waiter to take our order, 2 drinks and a dessert to share - easy enough, too bad we received our dessert, ate the whole thing before getting our drinks and our waiter was nowhere to be found. We asked for the check and the drinks were on the bill - our waiter was glad to remove the drinks and was apologetic however i couldn't believe that he didn't actually realize that we had no drinks. The dessert was good, I was really looking forward to trying one of the hot chocolate drinks, oh well - honestly the service really made me dislike this place.

We had an excellent waiter who knew his stuff. He advised me and my friends about what's good without us even asking. When I was ordering the Iced Chocolate (which actually tastes like chocolate) he told me not to add the flavors because the chocolate is so natural and pure it would be a shame to mix it with chemicals. These little advices here and there make a dining experience that much better. The food was great (although next time I'm ordering only chocolate). I must say that everyone's meal was big and not small portioned like others have mentioned. I also must add that when a person goes to a restaurant they order a meal not a sandwich because that you can get at a deli. The presentation of the chocolate was interesting and I would not compare it to a doctors office as others have mentioned. The bold man is a great place with great chocolate that you can't compare to Hershey's (like some people did) due to the fact that Hershey's cannot be stated to be chocolate. I am not trying to seem rude however, I am very upset about the senseless reviews people give places because they like overeating and used to buffets, and forger how much everything is in the city and say that a $10 to $16 entree is expensive. The only suggestion that I have for this place is the decor and the table landscaping. Some of the tables were in the pathway and all of them were tiny. I wouldn't imagine giving this place anything but a 5 because of the excellent food and service. We are coming back.
