I've been going to Matsu every Saturday with my wife for the past year and I have to say that it has never failed to satiate my hunger for Sushi. While it can be a little pricey at night their lunch menu is a real bargin. The staff is highly attentive and always willing to correct a mistake due to miscommunication (of which I fault myself because sometimes, well, I mumble). I will finish this review by saying: this is an excellent place to pop in on a sunny afternoon or even a quick dinner before a romantic date walking around central park and the Museum of Natural History (who doesn't love that architecture when it is all lit up?). Definitely, a must visit.

Takeout is fast and fresh! Never a wait when you want to dine-in and service is pretty good. Great sushi for the price!

Great neighborhood sushi and japanese food. I go there regularly, and am never disappointed, and the staff is always friendly. It is pretty small, but there usually isn't a wait. Sushi is very fresh, and there are different specials often (if live scallop is available, get it, it's melt-in-your-mouth delectible!)

The perfect order-in sushi...always fresh, no strange smells. The sashimi is above and beyond what you'd expect from a neighborhood place on the uws

I moved to NYC 3 years ago and the hunt was on to find good sushi. My hunt is over as this is FABULOUS sushi! I am so happy that Matsu exists. Their sushi is out of this world. You have to try their tempura or tempura rolls-the batter is amazing. Their eel and salmon skin rolls have a sauce that doesn't take over and is not heavy. Their avocado rolls melt in your mouth and their chicken teriyaki plate is very good and comes in a huge portion. You have to try this place!

This is the best place on he UWS for cheap sushi. The sushi here is good and fresh, and the portions are sizeable. Lunch is an excellent deal: three good rolls, soup and salad for 10 bucks. Admittedly most sushi joints around here offer the same deal but here the rolls are fat and full of fish unlike the tiny rolls at most other places with lunch specials. Also, one can include shrimp tempura (highly recomended) or salmon skin for no extra charge.

You know, we always get mad at those flyers in the hallway. I can't thank Matsu enough for leaving one. I've been sticking to basically two places in the neighborhood, Roppongi and a new place on Columbus & 74 (forgot the name) but I happened in here for lunch this week... and what a DELIGHT! I almost didn't go coz I demand great spicy tuna rolls and was afraid I'd be let down. They were THE BEST I've had so far. They were so much more than what you usually get including something crunchy that worked so well. I'm surprised at the complaint against size of portions as once again, they surprised me in giving me a big bowl of miso soup and a BIG beautiful green salad with lots of dressing.... not like the usual small portions you get esp at lunch. At 7.25 for 2 rolls AND the big salad AND the miso soup? Please, what a bargain. It was so good I asked for some yellowtail & salmon roe just to try their other offerings.... excellent excellent. I can't wait to go back. I think I have a new neighborhood place. (Oh and the service is wonderful, my waitress even opened the door for me when I left.)
