    The "Japanese" Debate

This is in response to some questions about why it matters whether or not a Japanese restaurant's chefs are Japanese. Essentially, a typical Americanized Japanese restaurant is owned and operated by non-Japanese. This is the type of restaurant that most people think of when they think of "Japanese" food. Rolls, sashimi, and terriyakis. Matsu is one of these types of restaurants. The food is serviceable, the wait staff is generally quite nice, and the atmosphere is casual and laid back. For those seeking a more authentic Japanese experience in this area, there's a place a block or two away. Pointing out that a Japanese restaurant is not run by Japanese is not an attempt to be racist or crude. It's a surprisingly honest way to assess the nature of a Japanese place.

    best value in the neighbourhood

The sushi chef special ($22) is one of the best sushi values in the city - always a rich variety of 10 pieces nigiri, and a chef's special role. On top of this, the customer service is outstanding - very friendly. Yes, as pointed out below, they aren't Japanese, but I hardly see how that matters. If you want the best sushi in the neighborhood, go elsewhere. But beyond that price point, Matsu is the best you could hope for.

As a new resident to the area, I will have to say this is the best sushi restaurant out of the 5/6 places I have visited. The overall package of freshness, customer service, price and presentation dwarfed the other sushi spots around. The specialty rolls and appetizers were both creative and delicious. I would strongly recommend this sushi restaurant to any sushi lovers around.

Good News to all the sea urchin lovers. This is the only place in the neighborhood i can find the live sea urchin! I love this restaurant so much that i need to eat there at least three times a week. The fish is always fresh, unique selections and always always nicely presented. The price is fair look, where else can u find 7 pieces of sushi plus one california roll combo for less than 15 dollars? wells, this place is always busy, so i would suggest to make reservations over the weekends or for the quick lunch. I love this place so much i strongly recommended to every sushi lover.

    Fresh Fish!

I've never written a comment for Menu Pages, but after reading the two previous comments that in my personal opinion were way off. I had to share my personal experience. I always order the Chef choice and have never ever been disappointed. The food is always fresh and tasty and I never have to wait forever to get it and as a result I eat here at least once a week.
