    Great Food - Policy Questionable

The food here is excellent. I used to live in the neighborhood and it was a staple. I wanted to go for my b-day, so I made a reservation online -I noted in the reservation comments that my husband was coming from work and might be late, but to please hold the reservation because it was my birthday so we were definitely coming. I guess they read it, because after the meal, they brought a piece of tiramisu with a candle. Nice, I thought, even though we were stuffed. When the bill came, they had charged $9 for the birthday treat I didn't want. I was upset and my husband talked to them - they took off the charge. However, I was embarrassed and wanted to get out of there quickly - it soured my birthday dinner. I felt like they were taking information they got in a roundabout way and swindling me with it. Not cool.

    Pasta Primavera

I was here last week with family. The food was amazing! I had the goat cheese & dried tomatoes salad, and the pasta primavera as an entree. Superb!! But a bit pricey. The place was almost full, but we had trouble hearing each other in conversation. They really should do something about the acoustics. Otherwise I loved it! I also liked the homey feel. It wasn't your typical college aged server coming to take your order. It was a middle aged man... could have been a server, could have been a manager, could have been the owner. It was charming, any way about it.

    Great date place

For the fans of Chelsey Lately, I urge you to try Maruzella because you might be served by a familiar face. Yes people, the one and only Chewy serves tables here as a side gig. We walked by this place and were amazed at the ambiance. Unlike most restaurants in NYC Maruzella is quiet and spacious. I don't have to yell to communicate with my date or knock over a table as I try to go to the washroom. On to the food! The stuffed mushrooms were delicious but the vegetable soup was a bit bland for my dates taste. The ravioli was very good and the chicken special was well flavoured. Would I return to my beloved Chewy? In a heartbeat!

    Too expensive

While the tablecloths are a nice touch, the prices for this kind of neighborhood restaurant with nothing special food are too expensive. Salad was good but the fish for $20+ was too salty. The bread is not fresh.

    Nice Atmosphere

Mid-priced Italian with decent food and a newly renovated and romantic dining room. Appetizer specials like asparagus or white bean salad can be excellent, pasta dishes are usually reliable and the veal Milanese is generous and tasty. The service is attentive and they let you linger and enjoy the atmosphere over a glass of wine while you look at the menu or sip coffee after your meal. The food might not be memorable once you leave but you will have enjoyed the experience while you're there.

Why does this place get good reviews?

I was incredibly disappointed and surprised that anyone could consider this place to be a good value. I could have gotten $5 pasta at a nearby pizza place and enjoyed it more than the $18 entrees I had here. The chicken with mustards seeds had more mustard seeds than chicken and no flavor. The roasted potatoes that came with it were bland and generic. Their homemade gnoccini was mushy and tasteless. The chicken with "prosciutto" was really chicken with some slices of deli meat ham on top. I could only eat 1/4 of my entree and then I just gave up.
